Can You Drive For Uber With A Felony?
If you have a felony conviction and are struggling to find work, Uber jobs can be a good option to earn a decent income, while maintaining a flexible schedule.
Currently Uber hires felons.
However, your particular chances of getting a job with Uber or Uber Eats will depend on many specific factors. We will discuss a felon’s chances of becoming a driver for Uber, and lay down the requirements of this job.
Even if you think your chances of getting hired as a felon are slim to none, you should still apply!
The financial incentive is worth it: some drivers make upward of $1,000-2,000 per week. The average driver reportedly makes about $1,300 per week, which is equivalent to $20-25 per hour. Not too shabby! So how can a felon start driving for Uber or Lyft?
UBER needs new drivers, and they want YOU!
Ride sharing is a very competitive business. Lyft, along with its main competitor UBER are very aggressive at recruiting new drivers. Both offer hefty sign-up bonuses of as much as $2,000, depending on your city, for new drivers!
Currently, UBER accepts about 10-15% of applicants with a past felony conviction. That is one out of 10-12 people that can get a great paying job in the fast growing industry.
However, 90% of applicants never take the necessary steps to apply. They fill out the initial application, but never finish it. So if you do apply – finish your application process!
These companies NEED more drivers, especially in new markets, and are very aggressive in their hiring process, and business development. Even more so after UBER’s self-driving program fiasco, which was supposed to be rolled out by 2019, but is now pushed back at least by 3 years!
This means that Uber will be looking to hire 1000’s of new drivers, to provide service to over 330,000,000 US population.
However, with massive push back from riders – complaints of robberies, sexual assault and even murders, both companies are under serious pressure and scrutiny to improve background checks on their drivers.
While both companies claim to run very thorough criminal background checks and be very strict in their driver selection process, the reality is that there are MANY folks who should not be drivers (based on their criminal records), but they are, and make very good money.
Do understand, that our goal is NOT to make it look easy to get a ride sharing job when you have a felony. The majority of people even with low level felonies get denied from this line of work. However, we know many who do get these jobs.
Numerous factors can be at play here, and THE BIG ONE is your location. In some areas, depending on demand for drivers, both Uber and Lyft are more open to considering people with a past criminal history.
Uber Background Check
Overall, the guidelines and process for conducting a background check at Uber are pretty much the same as at Lyft. Sex offenses, violent crimes and drug related charges are grounds for automatic disqualification. Often it does not matter how long ago the crime took place.
On the other hand, based on word of mouth reports from felons, Uber seems to have a more lenient hiring policy for ex-cons. Many people report getting a job with Uber, while at the same time being denied a job at Lyft.
What this means is that you should apply with both companies, because you never know where your luck with catch up with you.
Being deactivated as a driver!
There have also been reported cases of being suddenly deactivated after working for Uber for some time and having a stellar driving record and close to 5 star reviews.
Unfortunately, this is something that can happen, because Uber can choose to run a random background check on any driver at any time. Felons report failing a subsequent background check, after passing the initial one during the hiring process.
There is not much you can do, if you get deactivated as a driver and loose your job. The best word of advice if you are considering getting into the ridesharing economy is to look at it as a part time, temporary gig.
Since you can loose this job at any moment, you should try to be prepared:
– try to have some savings to fall back on
– look for a more stable job as you are working for Uber or Uber Eats.
– enroll into a degree program that can set you up for a more promising career in the future
What you should do if you are hired by Uber
Ok – this is a huge topic, and falls outside the scope of this guide, so I will only cover the basics here.
First of all, you need to always keep in mind that it is VERY easy to lose this job and if this happens – that’s it, THERE IS NO GOING BACK!!!
So follow the tips bellow 100%, and most likely you will not get “deactivated”. I have several friends who were ride share drivers, but for stupid mistakes were deactivated and cannot ever get back in again!
Once you are approved as a driver, you need a CAR – a decent car, or at the very least “newer” and very clean! Some will say “duh!” but trust me on this one.
- Your car must be in very clean/pristine condition: No rust, smoke, falling tail pipes, broken windows, or trash inside. No ripped trim either! If you get several complains for the quality of your car, you will be banned!
Basically you don’t need to have a brand new or even a 2-year old vehicle, but definitely not a clunker. - Be extra polite with riders: If you get several bad reviews, and your rating falls (there is no hard number, but 4.5 out of 5 stars is bad), you will be banned.
Many drivers now days offer free water bottles to riders, and vacuum their cars every 5-10 rides!!! - Get a Dash Camera!!! Most ride share service drivers now have dash-cams, to protect themselves from frivolous/meritless accusations or in case of an accident, to have hard proof.
Felons need a dash-cam much more so than regular drivers, because if you get wrongly accused, you will be “guilty by default” without video evidence. Definitely stay away from cams under $100 … This video footage may be a deciding factor in your life, so spend $200-300 on a great cam to be sure that you have the evidence when/if you need it!
You need a dash cam that films in front of your car as well as inside (with secondary rear view camera) the car. Don’t buy cheap cams – they are garbage, and often will not make a recording, that you need (even if they appear to be working). I made a mistake of getting a cheap dash camera, and when I needed it, there were no videos, while the camera was rolling 🙁
- You need a smart phone to install the ride sharing app, so you can drive customers. Everything happens through this app, so I recommend a decent Android phone or an iPhone 5s or newer. Your phone will also be your navigation!
Along with a phone you will need a decent car-mount to place it on. Here, I recommend a magnetic mount like Schoshe, which makes it very easy to take the phone off and put it back on with one hand, in less than 1/2 second! Don’t get operated mounts, as they are a driving hazard.
As for the phone itself, it’s very personal, and depends on you provider (AT&T / Sprint / T-Mobile / Verizon / Prepaid). With Sprint / Verizon, you pretty much can only use carrier phones (no unlocked options). For AT&T / T-Mobile, I recommend an unlocked phone, like Blu Life One X2 or Blu R1HD or Sony XA or Unlocked iPhone 5s or newer.
Moreover, an unlocked phone gives you the freedom to change carriers, and you won’t get stuck in a two year contract.
How to behave with passengers
- Never ask for tips! While Lyft allows tipping, you should never ask for tips. First, most people will leave tips anyway through the app. Second, if they did not leave a tip – that is fine – many people are just cheap. However, if you ask for it or complain, you WILL get bad review. Once again – just a handful of bad reviews and you are off the job forever!
- Don’t tell them that you are a felon! Ok, so I am all for transparency, but if you want to make someone very scared of you – tell them you have a conviction, while you drive them … J/K … never do that.
- NO ROAD RAGE If you drive aggressively, you will most likely be fired the first day! All ride sharing service companies are very strict about safety. One or two complains about dangerous driving is enough to get you deactivated! There is no going back, once you are out.
- Don’t make awkward conversations with riders. Many people don’t like talking with strangers – just drive them and that’s it… unless you get a talkative type. Then just keep a casual conversation going without being too personal.
- Be on time Many people are in a hurry, and use ride sharing for fast inexpensive transportation. Don’t come 15 minutes late for your pickup. If you want to eat lunch – turn off the app and you will not get any ride requests at that time.
- Don’t smoke in the car Riders often think of themselves as hip and cool, and today smoking is NOT considered cool. So definitely don’t smoke in the car with the rider in it, but also don’t smoke in the car when alone. I do smoke, but I hate the smell of cigarettes. So when I need to, I just pull over, and get out.
Here is a good “training video” if you are considering getting int this line of work:
Once you are setup and ready to start driving for Uber
Ok, assuming you get the job and set everything up with you car, phone, app, camera, etc, – you first ride should be during off-peak day hours… like between 11am and 3pm. Pick up and drive a few clients, and be EXTRA nice and polite. Ask your riders how their day goes, offer water, etc.
Mention that you are new and that this is your first day, and ask – would they care to give you some tips (as in ADVICE). This will open up the conversation and make time go by fast. This will also make your passenger have positive emotions about you – increasing your chances of getting tips and good reviews.
Additionally, in the beginning, you should also have your friends ride with you (through the app) and give you initial positive ratings.
Lastly, you may find yourself strapped for cash, and having to pay for car repairs, gas, incidentals, etc. In this case, consider applying for a bad credit credit card (chances are you have poor credit:)) and paying for what you need this way. Just be careful not to run up a huge balance that you will not be able to pay back, which will further ruin your credit.
Ok – this should about cover it for now – if you want more advice – hit some Lyft / Uber forums – they are a good place to start.
If you do not qualify (felonies that are less than 7 years old), you should still try to apply, unless 7 years is coming up soon. Also, check out our trucking jobs guide, as truck companies can be much more lenient with hiring felons.
Let us know in comments below if you were able to get a driver job with a felony.
UPDATE ON UBER: As of 2018, Uber began doing repeat criminal background checks on all existing drivers, through a new service called Checkr. Here are types of convictions that will prevent felons from getting a driving gig at Uber:
“Driver candidates cannot have a conviction for a felony, violent crime or sexual offenses, or a registration on the US Department of Justice National Sex Offender public website”.
Therefore, if you have a misdemeanor conviction, you will most likely be ok. However, there have been many cases where people with past misdemeanors have lost their jobs after a repeat background check.
I have never been charged/convicted of ANY violent crimes, drug crimes, or s*xual assaults, nor am i a felon!! I have 2 convictions of Driving without a license from when i was 15-17 yrs old, and a retail theft from a clothing store from when i was 21! I am now 29, and i was just denied due to my background check! Smh.
And what protects the drivers from felon riders?
Uber eats, Uber, Lyft, Postmates, handy pro, all denied me. A non violent drug offender. I feel felons shouldn’t spend money with companies like these who don’t support second chances for felons to support themselves and their families. I’m definitely limiting my spending at companies that gave me the NO when applying for work. If enough felons did this, we probably could get action taken with these companies.
I like this idea, if all felons started to boycott certain companies that weren’t felon friendly I know for a fact certain businesses would take a hit..
The issue is – how to let these companies know that ex-felons are boycotting them?
Yes you’re right,,,, let’s team up
I have same lyft experience. I’m willing to sue there ass in federal court as well as get these dam laws changed. We can run for President but we can’t drive for these companies. Something must be done but it’s going to be very hard and it’s going to take ALL of us together making huge sacrifices. I’m willing to fight. Here’s my email if your down to fight contact me and let’s put an end to this.
MRBERTHOLF @ GMAIL.COM ( it’s in lower case just want it to stand out)
Well just for the record, I believe that no matter what your criminal background consists of you should apply because you never know. I applied and upon viewing my completed report(via checkr the company used by uber) i had a great laugh and figured that made up for all he time i spent applying. Then 3 days later I received a welcome email from uber!!! Im still in shock. ***APPLY***
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
Congrats Holley
Im glad to hear you got a job with Uber!!
And yea – people got nothing to lose by applying… No need to even go to interview or speak with HR..
You’re ridiculous. Due to my location 1/3 of my ‘regulars’ were to the CT prison system bringing visitors to see their people. Late night mostly was drunks, prostitutes and drug dealers. Early morning was kids to school and insurance company employees getting to work. Any time anyone asked I freely shared my ‘story’. To the best of my knowledge no one cared – hard to maintain 9.3 rating if most clients are dissatisfied with service or uncomfortable with driver. So the majority of my clients are or are acquainted with a ‘criminal element. Even those that didn’t never exhibited any issue driving with me.
Yo Chris, doing the time is what we have already done. You know, as in … we paid our debt to society. To further punish us – for thecrest of our lives is paramount to double jeopardy and most certainly cruel and unusual punishment. I myself had a brief 1 year low period of my life wherein I had two LEO involvements. One for a misdemeanor and the other resulted in a felony. Neither of which were violent, s*xual or drug related. Fast forward 25 plus years and I am haunted by that conviction when applying for any job … nonetheless try to have a career. In those last 25 years, I have had zero negative LEO involvement and am “a model citizen” – and yet I cannot get “a real job”. So, yeah … you can take your nonsense and stuff it where the sun does not shine.
You absolutely CAN get a REAL job. Amazon hires felons for the warehouse. I haven’t taken any shifts yet, but the highest paying block I saw was paying $18.50 an hour starting. 40 hours a week. With benefits. I hear it’s a tough job, but I’ve done warehouse work before. how hard could it really be? You’re free to open most businesses. I owned a pizza place for a few years and had I not screwed that up I’d still have it. That was my fault, it had nothing to do with my record. That’s probably the best option for felons: go work in a restaurant for a few years (they don’t do background checks), save as much as you can, and open a small restaurant.
Yo, I find it funny that you guys knew you were taking a chance on getting a job when you applied. Then when your past catches up you get pissed because they went back further than 7 years. Like they were the ones who “lied to you”.. I feel your pain but your doing the time..as in dont do the crime…this job deals with the public, if someone knew you had trouble with the law, they wouldn’t want a ride from you.. you slip thru the cracks and get pissed when you get caught..loz
How did you know where approved to drive for Uber?
I have a bogus case and conviction dating back to June 21, 2009 (currently October 28, 2018) and I found out today that Lyft will not be accepting my application for work as a driver. Pathetic! Felony disenfranchisement and discrimination from the labor force is exactly why the recidivism rate is so high in the USA. Also I’ve been driving for Uber for 11 months and have completed about 3,600 rides, and I have a 4.92 out of 5.00 stars rating. What’s particularly stupid to me is that I can or could easily be a truck driver, but I can’t be a Lyft driver, despite being a Uber driver, and I’m also approved for Roadie. Good one Lyft.
For Uber it goes by state. In my state they only have to go back 7 years. Even if they search more our public records only show up to ten years. They’d have to pay to get full records and Uber’s position seems to be people deserve a second chance if it’s outside a certain time period. I think they use 7 years as well. But they do check further back for violent crimes or s*x crimes. If you’re on the s*x offender registry don’t bother applying or any of them. You will be denied. Try Dominos instead. They make a LOT of money.
I recently applied for uber eats… my felonies didnt show up, but all my misdemeanors did. And they denied me for a criminal mischief misdemeanor. It seems as though they dont hire anyone whose ever been in trouble. Regaurdless of my full coverage and brand new 2018 car… i did not measure up.
Applied for Lyft Oct 2016 with felony and misdemeanor theft charges all from the same day in June 2013 when I was barely 18 and got approved and on the road in 2 days but Oct 4, 2018 I got deactivated over “an issue with my background check” which is the same as it was when I first applied. I did over 500 rides and had a 4.96 rating….
I have been driving for lyft for 2 years and completed over 3100 rides and maintain a 4.91 rating….have been through 2 background checks now they switch to company called Checkr…..lyft deactivates my account…..cant drive to pick up people anymore…. ? Funny though i have been hired by an airline at an international airport…not to mention have passed a Department of Homeland Security background check to receive my customs seal…..There is a problem withjn lyft as they Purposely mislead people by saying their background check only goes back 7 years…How is this not misleading and misrepresentation??? how can i be screened and hired to work on 70 million dollar aircraft with hundreds of peoples lives. But i cant drive as i have been doing for 2 years?? My question is where are all the Lawyers with some gonads??? We need to challenge and cheang Uber and Lyfts lying and misleading ways…. why is it also they wont hire felons but they will take their money as a passenger….. PEOPLE CAN YOU SEE THE DOUBLE STANDARD.. FELONS CANT MAKE MONEY, BUT WE AT UBER AND LYFT WILL GLADLY TAKE A FELONS MONEY…..COWARDS, LOW LIFES, AND WHAT ABOUT THIS CHECKR COMPANY DO THEIR OWNERS HAVE CLEAN BACKGROUNDS???
Love your comment ❤
Don’t let them get your hopes up on their guidelines. I have a class E felony Fraud document, 12 years old nonviolent. Other than that never been in trouble A-day in my life. They still denied me, not worth wasting your time.
10 year old felony non-violent offense, no theft. And still was denied by Lyft. Don’t be fooled by LYFT “guidelines”. They check every single thing on your record.
Forget Lyft. They use 40 year old convictions against drivers
Have a misdemeanor possession of marijuana from 2012 they denied me bullshit I’ve never been truned down on a misdemeanor I dident even know they could see that
Well, I recently tried to become a driver partner with the Lyft drive platform and was denied because I had a number of misdemeanor convictions, all of them over ten years old. I did have one Misdemeanor assault over ten years old and one misdemeanor,” taking a motor vehicle without permission”. The others were a misdemeanor shoplifting crime. I realize that any criminal offense on your record does not look good but none were felonies. I have had considerable success in my life since then. I am a full-time university only 20 credits shy of getting my Bachelors degree. I have not had so much as a traffic ticket in the past ten years. Also, I purchased my own home three years ago. Everything about my life looks nothing but positive in the last ten years.
I feel for you buddy I had the same problem with a Uber was approved to drive in January deactivated in April reactivated and July deactivated again in September over a 31 year old drug conviction very frustrated
25+ year old property crime felony conviction. I got approved to drive for Uber 2 months ago. Lyft denied me this week. I’d love to know how to appeal…
Don’t get comfortable. FYI: Due to substance abuse I racked-up several felony convictions: 30 years ago. Did my time, got help and no subsequent offence since then, not even a traffic ticket. For past 8 years I’ve worked full-time as Claims Investigator at a Fortune 400 company. 10 months ago I applied to be an UBER Partner as well as Lyft. Based on background check Lyft turned me down immediately. UBER accepted me. I drove, maintained a 4.91 rating in UBER’s 5 point Star system and have numerous compliments from passengers posted to my UBER Profile. Not a single complaint or issue arose while driving or at any other time. Periodically UBER does random background screening. Each time I passed – until last week. Received email alerting me to forthcoming ‘Adverse Action’. Within 4 hours my UBER driver account was deactivated. Essentially, after 10 months of performing flawlessly, passing initial and subsequent background checks done through same company, Cheker, I was fired. Called UBER support, drove 1 1/2 hours to closest Greenlight hub with no result other than, too bad for me. UBER did not dispute my driver rating or performance. Neither was any explanation for why, despite passing numerous previous, backround checks, nothing untoward having happened, why suddenly I was not UBER worthy. Checked with several local attorneys that specialize in labor law – nothing I can do. The way the law is written here in CT it’s perfectly legal what happened. I made sure to average between $200-$300 each week to get caught-up on bill’s accumulated due to taking care of mother-in-law with dementia. Was just making it. Now I have no idea what to do
Can’t afford the bill payments on my single job and need the flexabiliy UBER provided. I see bankruptcy as only alternative, actually have appointment scheduled with attorney specializing in that. 4 hour warning I was being fired with no recourse to speak with anyone in authority at UBER. I really recommend not setting yourself up for a similar situation. I depended on the UBER money and now, through no fault of my own, it’s gone. Totally unexpected. Just not worth the stress and anxiety I’m going through right now, wouldn’t want anyone to feel this way. Best of luck to each and all.
You’re leaving information out of the story: what were the felony convictions for? Saying they were because of drugs don’t tell us what they were. If it was something violent or s*xual eventually that’ll get you kicked off. Your best bet is to apply for DoorDash, Postmates, Instacart, and Caviar. They’ll all say yes. Amazon and Lyft will say no.
Typically substance abuse convictions don’t result in s*x offences – as is the case with me. I’m, 60 yrs. old, former Marine Recon with additional law enforcement training; I robbed banks – 30 years ago. The minimum take I would invest a month research in was around $200,000.00. If any idiot thinks I’d jeopardize freedom for 50 bucks then they need mental health counseling. No one was hurt in ant of the robberies. The last offence occurred over 30 years ago. Since then I got involved in community out-reach, bought a multi-unit apartment building and gained employment at a Fortunate 400 company as a Security consultant and Claims Investigator. Due to my past this Company screws me as well in pay, hence trying UBER – I am the lowest paid Manager on their payroll across he US. Currently trying to grt back into private work. Have reached-out to several Companies worked at in the past: DynCorp, Andrews International and Triple Canopy. The last 10 years of discrimination and abuse has taken it’s toll on me. The last incident with UBER as convenience me nothing going to change; I’m an idiot for thinking anything I do will have an effect. I made some stupid mistakes, spent 10 years making amends, and still seen as a scumbag. If they won’t let you join em’ BEAT the crap out of em, and get paid well for doing it.
Sue them in fedrel court for not dollowing their own policy which is 7 years background check. And yes maybe they want you to rob the bank again…
Same story here my one and only felony was over 37 years ago. I was approved for Uber and drove for almost two years and I got deactivated. How much time do you have to do? How long do you think after all the time is gone by. You and I aren’t running women over in our driverless toys. I call bs!!
I had a felony conviction from 1993. Have lived incident free ever since. I’ve been employed with the Gov. for 21 years, 10 as a Network Engeer where I had to obtain a Public Trust, and i had to obtain a Public Trust to coach youth basketball. My oldest went off to college so I decided to try & make some extra money, yet Lyft denied me. smdh
Same here. This article is nothing more than click bait for advertising dollars. Lyft and Uber do indeed DISCRIMINATE during their hiring process and should be sued for it.
Yup. Got that right. I almost spent $700 for new tires and detailing my car cause of these misleading articles. Given both Uber and LYFT now require your car inspection before they do the background check glad I didn’t , just a giant waste of time
I have a 40 yr felony conviction. I tweeted UBER support asking them if I would pass their background check. Link below is UBERs response. NO FELONIES, no exceptions, period. There is no 7 yr or 10 yr time window. Anyone telling you or suggesting otherwise is completely wrong. https://tinyurl.com/y4ajxyg7
If it’s not violent or s*xual Uber will say yes.
Great site. I am so glad I found you. I just felt lost as a convict, and my fears led me here. Thank you so much for the direction and hope. Because of you, I feel good about my plan to overcome my past. Thank you
Lyft is full of sh**! My felony is nearly 16 years old. I’ve passed background checks for Wal Mart, Target, Dollar General Distribution & Home Depot but apparently denied from Lyft. GTFOH!!!
That is a small theft charge to be a felony. Also very unfortunate. Want laptop was it in 1994? Was it the amount it was worth that made it a felony?
I can’t remember. It was like $600.
I call b.s. on this. I had a felony from 1994 for taking an unattended laptop. Lyft found it on my record and told me I was banned for life because of it.
Absolutely call b/s on lyft! I have a misdemeanor from 1995 and I was denied
Absolutely bs lyft refuse to hire me for only misdemeanor from 11 years ago. Smh
I have 13 felonies and 12 misdemeanors from 2008. Uber hired me. 100 trips so far. Wondering how long before I get deactivated
Uber is something else
Mine are old and they just did a report on me
So we’ll see
I’ve been with them years
I did 171 rides in 6 weeks with a 5 star rating and was deactivated on the platform for failing the background check. 🙁 Have been unsuccessful at reinstating the account and no explanation why they hired me THEN fired me and the customers loved me.
13 felonies and they were all different crimes or did they run together?
Are u still going? Had four months strong before being deactivated.
FIRSR OF ALL CONGRATULATIONS AND SOCOND OF ALL… can i ask? What state are you in? And are you still driving for them? Thats really awesome good for you. I have an extensive record myself but really want to drive for one of them. I was denied already by Lyft and now waiting for Uber….
One more question, i kno this is personal but what might your felonies be for? Its totally ku if you dont answer. You give me Hope thank you.
