Did you know? Whether you choose to deliver food by car, bike, scooter, or on foot, you must submit your social security number and undergo background screening.
While you can upload all your documents online, you’ll need to book a safety screening that will be conducted in person.
How Does the Uber Eats Background Check Work?
The applicants will undergo the Uber Eats background check process, which consists of two parts – the motor vehicle report (MVR) and the criminal background check.
Motor Vehicle Report
If you want to deliver food for Uber Eats by car, you must have your own vehicle. It’s also mandatory to have a driver’s license and a minimum of one year of driving experience in the U.S.
In addition, your driving record must be clean. If you have a history of tickets and driving violations, you won’t be able to drive for Uber Eats.
But if you have no more than three minor violations in the last three years, Uber Eats won’t automatically disqualify you.
The driving requirements for Uber Eats are much less stringent than they are for Uber. If you want to work as a regular Uber driver, you would have to be at least 25 years old.
It’s also important that your vehicle is in good condition. Your car must pass the vehicle inspection, and it usually needs to be up to 15 years old.
You can’t have any taxi color paint or branding on your vehicle. You also need proof that it’s your vehicle, as you can’t drive for Uber Eats with a rented car. But do note that Uber Eats vehicle requirements vary by state and city.
Criminal Background Check
Uber Eats will also run a criminal background check on you. This can take from three to five business days. However, depending on the state, the criminal background check can take even longer.
To be more precise, depending on the regulations and laws of the state and city where you want to apply, your background check might be more extensive.
For instance, it might include your entire adult history.
While some companies run background checks on your entire history, Uber Eats will only look at the last seven years. If you committed a minor crime more than seven years ago, it won’t appear on your background check.
Uber Eats uses third-party screening agencies to perform background checks on their candidates. These include Checkr, HireRight, and Samba Safety.
These agencies look for public records on local, state, and national databases. Once an agency runs a background check on you and sends it to Uber Eats, they will assess your eligibility for the job.
Keep in mind that credit checks aren’t included in Uber Eats background checks. Depending on the laws, practices, and regulations of the city you applied in, the background check might also include an individual assessment. This will give recruiters a chance to look for proof of rehabilitation and good character.
You can also check out jobs that don’t require a background check.
Did you know? Before the background check even starts, you’ll need to provide Uber Eats with a consent form. This will give them the authority to access your criminal record.
What Happens After the Background Check?
After three to five days, Uber Eats should receive your background check report from the third-party screening agency.
If you get accepted, you can go right ahead and create an account on the Uber Eats app. Just follow the steps provided by Uber Eats on their website.
If you get rejected, you have the option to contact Uber Eats and enquire about the reason for the rejection of your application. But don’t worry. If you do get rejected for the job, you can always reapply for Uber Eats in two to four months.
Can You Work for Uber Eats With a Criminal Record?
You may be wondering if Uber Eats will even consider hiring you if you have a criminal history.
As mentioned, Uber Eats only runs background checks that extend to the last seven years.
However, if you committed a more serious crime, like a felony, it will most likely stay on your criminal record forever. Even if you were convicted of a felony more than seven years ago, it will still appear on your background check.
That being said, some states limit how far a criminal background check can go. This is known as Ban The Box.
For example, the seven-year limit is imposed in California, New York, Maryland, New Mexico, Montana, Kansas, Nevada, Washington, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Colorado, Kentucky, Texas, and Hawaii. Therefore, even a convicted felon can work for Uber Eats in some states.
Criminal background checks will reveal anything from convicted crimes and arrest charges to pending cases and completed sentences.
Some offenses will automatically get you disqualified. These include felonies such as murder, manslaughter, sexual assault, violent crimes, terrorism-related offenses, and similar. In addition, registered sex offenders won’t be able to apply for Uber Eats either.
If you committed a misdemeanor, it shouldn’t stand in the way of your employment. When it comes to pending charges, they might also prevent you from working at Uber Eats. Until you’re proven innocent, therefore, you won’t be able to apply.
How Much Does Uber Eats Pay?
According to Glassdoor, an average Uber Eats Driver earns $15-21 per hour, or $30 – 42K per year.
On the low end of the earning curve an Uber eats driver only earns $21K annually, while on the high-end its possible to earn as much as $58K annually.
If you are interested in earning a higher salary, consider getting a truck driving job.
Become An Uber Eats Driver
Anyone who wants to work for Uber Eats must go through a motor vehicle report (MVR) and a criminal background check. If you have a clear record, you should hear back from Uber Eats in a matter of days. If you have a criminal history, however, there’s a chance you might be rejected.
But even if you are a convicted felon, this doesn’t mean that you will automatically get disqualified.
Depending on the regulations of the state and city you live in, Uber Eats might not be able to find a record of any criminal offenses that happened more than seven years ago.
