Trucking Companies That Hire Felons With No Experience
One of the biggest go to jobs for felons is trucking. The average salary of a truck driver is $40,000 a year. In addition to high pay, becoming a truck driver is actually a realistic way for a felon to earn a good living.
There are many trucking companies that are willing to hire people without experience, and are open to giving someone with a felony conviction a second chance.
However, you will still have to explain your lack of employment, and pass the criminal background check.
Lets take a look at what it takes for a felon to become a truck driver, how much you can make, and which trucking companies you should apply with to land a job.
Average truck driver salary
Across the US, annual trucker salary is $39,000-40,000. This is for a commercial truck driver with a Class A CDL license.
Considering the fact the median individual income across US is only around $30,000, trucker pay is very good. As truck driver you can be earning at least $10,000 more.
Highest paying CDL jobs for 10% of truck drivers are at least $58,000.
OTR (over the road) truck drivers earn the most money. They can make $65,000 – 73,000 per year.
Overall, there are a number of factors that will ultimately impact how much you will earn. They include:
– your CDL license class
– commercial driving experience; veteran truckers get the highest pay.
– type of driving you do and cargo that you carry
– company you work for
– where you live
There are basically two types of pay structures – Local and OTR:
OTR (over the road) jobs
OTR means long distance hauls, across many states .. you get the picture – you go on the trip for 2-3 weeks at a time.
You get paid per mile – anywhere from $0.40 to $0.60 … sometimes a little less – sometimes a little more. The average is around $0.45-0.50 per mile. Most OTR truckers put in 2500 miles per week. So if you do the math, average weekly salary is $1,125 – 1,250. This is equivalent to $54,000-60,000 per year.
You get this kind of money only if you work for a a company, and not as an owner-operator or OO (meaning you have your own truck). Owner-Operator truckers make a lot more per mile, but often EARN LESS, after deducting all the costs (fuel, maintenance, insurance/bonding, other overhead).
As a felon without experience, you can start at around $0.38-0.40 per mile
Local trucking jobs
This is self explanatory – you come home every night. A good example of a local truck driving job is working for UPS or FedEx
Typical hourly rates in US are between $12 and $29 per hour. Clearly, there is a huge difference there, but the average is around $19 per hr (50th percentile so to say).
If you have a felony conviction and no prior experience, your starting pay rate will most likely be $12-14 per hour.

Walmart Truck Driving Jobs For Felons
Trucking jobs at Walmart are considered to be some of the best in the industry. This is because Walmart is known to pay the highest salaries to its OTR drivers.
According to a CBS News report issued in January 2019, Walmart will pay an average of $87,500 to its first year drivers. Truckers who are working in the Northeast regions of the US will also earn a 5% premium on mileage as well as activity pay. Moreover, a quarterly bonus is given to any driver that maintains a safe driving record.
In addition to generous pay, Walmart offers an impressive benefits package to its truck drivers. It includes a 401K plan, excellent health and dental insurance, an associate stock purchase place, a discount center for shopping, estate guidance and other commuter benefits.
Walmart is the largest retailer in the US, with stores in every state and almost every city. As a result, truck drivers are needed to move millions of goods and products across state lines to thousands of store locations and distribution centers. Walmart employs about 8,000 drivers and its truck fleet is considered to be one of the largest and safest in the world.
A Walmart truck driver averages about 300 mile hauls per week, has a regular work schedule, and is home every week to reset and rest. Drivers are not responsible for loading and unloading of the merchandise.
This is a huge bonus, and is very different from any truck driving jobs. Many commercial truckers can be away from home for weeks, and only get a chance to relax at random rest stops and motels on the road.
To be considered for the job, you must have at least 2.5 years of prior driving experience as a Class A truck driver in the last three years. Also, you should not have any traffic violations or convictions for a DUI, reckless driving involving alcohol/drugs within the last ten years.
In addition to trucking, there are dozens of others felon friendly job opportunities at Walmart.

How to apply for a truck driving job with a felony conviction
The majority of large trucking companies have an online application that you need to fill out.
Before you go to fill it out, have the following information on hand:
– Social Security Number
– All your residential addresses over the past 3 years
– Current drivers license number
– Drivers license history for the past 3 years
– History of employment (up to 10 years)
– History of traffic accidents, violations, and / or convictions during the last 5 years (includes any – DUI, reckless driving convictions and license suspensions)
– Any military service history
As we said before, having a criminal record or a felony conviction WILL NOT disqualify you from getting hired. However, you need to be 100 % honest about your history, when you are filling out the application.
Do realize that every company you apply with is required by law to conduct a very thorough background check on all applicants. So they will discover everything you may want to hide after digging through your driving history and all related arrests/convictions.
But again, the good news is that if your felony is does not involve a motor vehicle in any way, you have a strong chance at being employed.
If you don’t have a CDL, but have an excellent driving record, consider ride-sharing driving such as Lyft or Uber. Find out whether Lyft and Uber hire felons, and what the job requirements are.
Become a Lyft Driver & Get up-to $2,000 Signup Bonus!
Both Lyft and Uber are in need of new drivers, and offer excellent signup bonuses!
Another piece of good news is that because there is such a shortage of professional truck drivers, many big companies are willing to hire people who only have a CDL learners permit and can provide training as well as help with obtaining the license.
Truck Driving Job Outlook For 2022-2025
Currently, there are as many as 200,000+ long haul trucker positions open across the US. By 2023, the number of open positions is expected to reach 330,000!
While trucking, especially OTR, is a very hard, exhausting and often depressing job, its in great demand. This is because trucker turnover is extremely high.
The median age of a truck driver is 47 years old, and the industry is having an extremely difficult time recruiting and retaining young drivers.
This means that if you have a felony and are struggling to find steady employment, this may be a good opportunity for you.
Moreover, trucker salaries are growing at a rate of 8-12% per year, which is huge considering the fact that most other professions see an annual salary increase of around 0.5%.
There are also handsome sign-on bonuses that large trucking companies offer to recruit drivers. Typically, these can range from $1,500 -3,500. However, an experienced OTR driver can get a huge sign up bonus of up to $10,000.
For example, Roehl Transport offers to pay $10,000 sign on bonus to experienced OTR truckers with a CDL Class A license. You get paid the first $500 bonus after completing the first assignment, and then bonuses in the increments of $500 for every 10,000 you drive, until you reach a total of $10,000
Some negative features of OTR work
For many people who start driving long haul trucks, there is a huge lifestyle change that requires a serious mental and physical adjustment:
– For weeks at a time, day and night, you are crammed into a tiny space the size of a closet
– Tremendous pressure of making the delivery safely and on time
– Erratic sleep patterns, many truckers drive at night
– You spend the majority of your time alone, and its easy to get lonely and depressed
– It may be hard to be away from family and friends for weeks at a time
Can A Female Felon Get A Job As A Truck Driver?
Yes!!! In fact, the truck driving industry is aggressively recruiting female drivers, offering large sign-up bonuses, training, and assistance paying for truck driving courses. Currently, there are only 6% of women employed as truck drivers.
This means that if you are a woman with a felony, and think you may be cut out for this lifestyle, trucking can become a steady source of income. This is an especially good opportunity if you are young, single and don’t have kids.
Other Types Of Driver Jobs For Felons
If trucking is not exactly your dream vocation, but you do like driving, there are a few other opportunities to explore:
–Tow Truck Driver – Many towing companies are small owner-operated outfits, and do NOT perform background checks.
In fact, they would prefer someone with “experience” in dealing with unpleasant situations. You do need a CDL class A to drive a tow truck.
Ride Share Driver – can felons drive for companies like Lyft or Uber? … Hint – yes with limitations!
I am a new grad. I have a felony trafficking charge dated back to 2009. Looking for training and job in otr. I live in Valdosta ga. Willing to travel. I am a hard dedicated worker. Please help.
Hello imm a convicted felon domestic battery case from 2018 but took 4 years to resolve it was a different case for both sides and the honorable judge. . I was given 5 years of probation . Since 2018 I’ve been rebuilding my life taking the necessary classes and therapy and have completed all the above. The court and probation department has cleared me to travel within the united states for work . Ive made mistakes I regret whole heartedly but I’ve focused on being a better man and trusting in the Lord with all my heart over these past 4.5 years I’ve became very active in my community, a mentor for troubled kids, a evangelist and very active in the local church. Most importantly I’ve owned my mistakes and have learned from them and use it as motivation to earn my spot the public again …I will graduate from training on January 12th2023 I will have an interstate class A CDL and also going for doubles and triples. Im just looking for a company that will give me a second chance in life that will allow me to add my drive and will power to it.. if you’re willing to work with me I will not let you down!
Thank you
DO NOT GO TO W.E.
They do not provide HEAT to drivers when they stop for 10 hour break!!
Pay is garbage!!
Best of luck..
MANY better choices!!
I ll be on the market the 1st of the year with a valid clp 61 years old coming off disability to now drive into my future !! No moving violations in over 10 years @ have @ suggestions or advice == greatly appreciated R A Fowler ll
I’m in a similar situation. I have a recent drug possession felony, but a clean driving record and I love you drive. I’ve had several delivery driver jobs in the past but can’t even do that now due to criminal background. I have a bachelor’s degree and a masters degree but can’t use those either.
I’ve passed the cdl written test before, but didn’t get the driving skills needed to pass the driving test.
Its very frustrating to keep applying for menial labor jobs and getting denied based on background report.
I’ve changed my life around and the only obstacle I have to make the change complete is to find a job that pays more than minimum wage and is something I’m passionate about. I’d love to be able to buy my own truck and go that route but I lack experience in the industry.
If there’s anyone who would be interested in taking a chance on me, I’m a very loyal and dedicated employee.
I know it’s not a trucking company but Smithfiels has a large fleet of trucks allover the US doing local runs to farms. They hire felons no matter the age of conviction. Mine was only 3 years old and they hired me no questions.
I have 2 felonies over 30 years ago and a felony battery from Jan 2017 that my ex girlfriend tried to get dropped. I have a perfect driving record and I have my CDL learners permit and dot physical. I’m 51 and on disability. I can’t afford the training and the gov stopped the grant money. I’m willing to do whatever it takes. That includes relocation if needed.
I have my CDL permit and been looking to find a company with CDL Training but being that I have 20 year old Felony’s Resisting arrest and received stolen property and a poss it is very hard to have a application approved I made some mistakes when I was younger but now I’m a Grown man and 10 years Sober ii would surely appreciate it if anyone could give me some positive feedback My email is concretemike1153@gmail.com
You need to expunge your criminal records you go back to the same judge that convicted you to start the process get a copy of your criminal background there you will find the case number for your conviction
I am seeking a local or OTR driving job and need CDL training and license. I have a 2.5 year old drug felony and some misdemeanors. I have a clean driving record. I have turned my life around, completed substance abuse treatment, will be getting early termination from probation in a few months and am very serious about my sobriety. I desperately need a good job and with my lack of experience and background, am afforded few opportunities. I am hard working, intelligent, punctual, loyal and positive. starcrusher1967@gmail.com
I am due to graduate CDL school (Ivy Tech) Sept. 30th. I have non violent non s*x related felonies over 5-6 yrs old. I have a driving while suspended but all fines fees paid. Any recommendations on companies??? I live in Indiana & would like to be home weekly if possible.
Hi, I’m in my early 20s. I was a teenager in college when I got in trouble in 2018. I have felony from 2018. It is considered a violent felony. I spent 1 year in jail and 1 year on probation. I currently have my Class A CDL as of July 6th. I am trying to get my life back on track. I am looking for an OTR or local opportunity. My home state is Louisiana. I am very motivated and hoping that there is a company that would consider hiring me. I would love to interview and discuss further. My number is 504 – two 55- fifty-eight zero 7. Thank you
Society tends to be hard on people with a background. However if you dig deep and apply yourself it work out. I see inspiring comments and some where the person responding haven’t put much thought. I have had three calls yesterday I responded I needed to get a copy of their cdl. I’m currently in rhe renewal period for insurance so I need to know that I can cover that hire. Nine of the prospects responded with information requested
So I’m new on here & I’ve been reading some of these comments so I’m hoping there will be some luck on here. I’m a Felon, s*x offender. Convicted in 2014, 5 years of probation. Completed my counseling with proof. I served my time & I’m done with everything. I was just a dumb kid who messed up badly and I paid for it. Recently I received my CDL in May of 2022. I’ve had calls from other employers , but once I told them my charge, they pretty much said “I’m sorry sir, but your disqualified & good luck”. Usually I just hang up once they start saying that, I dont care. Like how is my crime related to driving??? So what, Im a S.O & did my time & I’ve came back. So basically your going to judge me by my background & not my skills, Discriminate much?….sucks to be them. Lawsuits are starting to happen to those companies now. There losing a hard working motivated person. I’m currently in a process for CR England. After I explained my issue with the recruiter, the gentlemen wants me to send some sort of document to show when I started & discharged of Probation, along with Restitution I had to payback. Sounds good so far but not sure yet. I know one thing is to stay away from big companies. I live in Macomb County, Michigan. If anyone is looking for a truck driver in my area let me know. I will be active on here so drop a comment below. If I don’t find anything soon, I’m just going to get my own Semi & take loads. Possibly start my own business. I wish everyone on here the best of luck.
Hey Gregg I’m kinda going thru the same!! I have one violent charge but it’s over 14 years old though! I have been home for 2 years now from being incarcerated for 9. My charge took place back In 2011 And prime recruiter told me that it goes by from when I was released and not from when I was convicted with voluntary manslaughter!! It was so discouraging!! But I just took my test and I have passed all three so now it’s just I’m looking for a company that will Take me and offer training!! So that’s where I stand I’m a very hard motivated worker and I’m going to prove just that!! But I say all this to say! We know who we are, but to them we’re just another number!! Their lost keep pushing towards your goals!! Because we going to the TOP one way or the other!! Don’t lose focus of your dreams and plans/goals!! You are going to make it
I have the same Charge of V. M. And I’m currently I’m currently in school at Miller-Motte CDL course. Just have someone write you a pre-hire letter and you should be able to attend their school. From there it’s finding the job that will accept us.
I have the same charge, voluntary manslaughter. Were you ever able to find an employer, and, if so, where?
I too am a registered s*x offender original crime dates back to 1991. My only other felonies are Failure to register. I once had my CDL class A license but foolishly didn’t renew them in time. I am in CA trying to regain them. All negative responses so far. Even with CR England.
I’m a S.O. also, just obtained my CDL A last month. My charge was from 04’. A senior in high school dating a freshman. State law indicates there to be no more than 36 months between ages, there was 38 months between us. Her parents were going threw a custody battle and we’d been dating for 6 months. I received 5 years of probation and haven’t gotten as much as a speeding ticket since. I’ve filled out 20 applications for local, regional, dedicated jobs but nothing yet. Going to look for OTR this week since I’m needing to get back to work. Was an automotive dealer parts manager before getting my license. I’ve got 4 kids and wanted to be home every weekend to spend time with them and watch them grow up. Doesn’t look like that’s in the cards. Anyone have any guidance for the new guy? Email me @ howardfamily39090 at yahoo. I’m glad I found this thread, gives me some hope.

Houston texas. Trying to obtain my class a CDL. I have a wife and kids I have to take care of. My record cannot stop me. I am a grown man now.
My husband and I are interested in becoming cdl truck drivers. We both have family members who worked in the industry. My husband’s uncle used to work with TMC. However my husband is a felon. Sex offender. It’s hard finding a company who will hire not alone willing to train
I am currently in the process of obtaining my CDL-A license in Fort Pierce area of Florida. I was released from prison in 2017 and I got off of probation in early 2020 for a violent crime I committed in 2011. Its been a struggle trying to find a company that will give me a chance, this message board gives me hope though. I am looking to work for company in the area who can look beyond someone’s past life and work together. My email is fireskate12 at gmail
I’m in school now and seeking to work for a company that will give me the flexibility of leaving for a couple weeks to 3 weeks from time to time to do my projects on the side in helping others who struggle such as homeless or addicts. I myself don’t drink nor do drugs not even weed and really focus on a healthy lifestyle but I do have a non-traffic and non drug or alcohol arrest on my record. It’s a Sexual Assault Case to be honest but that is not who I am. I’m the most passive person you could ever meet. It takes a lot to get me upset and even then I don’t allow any sort of hate or resentment in my heart. If there is something I’ve learned to change is not to judge anyone like I use to. There are always two sides to a story but sometimes things happen for a reason. I was not a horrible person before but this has definitely turned me into a much better person. If you are able to guide me in the right direction to which companies offer a flexible schedule that would be awesome
Arron I would like to chat with you, maybe we could help each other, contact me at tobysdad25 @ gmail.com

None of my felonies are traffic related. If you would like more history on that I will give information to those who are interested and willing to help me to continue supporting my family with a good job.
Do you hire non violent felonies?
I’m hiring as well prefer you to be off probation or parole however I will work with motivated probationary. Hummingbird Express 417-698-4080. We are hiring OTR and some local tow driver positions.
If you’re interested in running OTR and have OTR experience with a valid Class A CDL and medical card, I’ll take you with the felony regardless of the age of felony. As long as the felony isn’t driving related. My preference is youre off parole and probation. Text me 202-361-9828. Only a few trucks left and this is not a scam or gimmick.

Ray you make it sound so easy, maybe you know something that we don’t know. Please enlighten us, is there some places that’s handing out free Tractors and Trailers, I would definitely love to know, unless you’re a trust fund sliver spoon kid that’s already have money. But again please give us the secret in getting our very own Truck and Trailer, when we looking for employment with a company and we got felonies??
