Trucking Companies That Hire Felons With No Experience
One of the biggest go to jobs for felons is trucking. The average salary of a truck driver is $40,000 a year. In addition to high pay, becoming a truck driver is actually a realistic way for a felon to earn a good living.
There are many trucking companies that are willing to hire people without experience, and are open to giving someone with a felony conviction a second chance.
However, you will still have to explain your lack of employment, and pass the criminal background check.
Lets take a look at what it takes for a felon to become a truck driver, how much you can make, and which trucking companies you should apply with to land a job.
Average truck driver salary
Across the US, annual trucker salary is $39,000-40,000. This is for a commercial truck driver with a Class A CDL license.
Considering the fact the median individual income across US is only around $30,000, trucker pay is very good. As truck driver you can be earning at least $10,000 more.
Highest paying CDL jobs for 10% of truck drivers are at least $58,000.
OTR (over the road) truck drivers earn the most money. They can make $65,000 – 73,000 per year.
Overall, there are a number of factors that will ultimately impact how much you will earn. They include:
– your CDL license class
– commercial driving experience; veteran truckers get the highest pay.
– type of driving you do and cargo that you carry
– company you work for
– where you live
There are basically two types of pay structures – Local and OTR:
OTR (over the road) jobs
OTR means long distance hauls, across many states .. you get the picture – you go on the trip for 2-3 weeks at a time.
You get paid per mile – anywhere from $0.40 to $0.60 … sometimes a little less – sometimes a little more. The average is around $0.45-0.50 per mile. Most OTR truckers put in 2500 miles per week. So if you do the math, average weekly salary is $1,125 – 1,250. This is equivalent to $54,000-60,000 per year.
You get this kind of money only if you work for a a company, and not as an owner-operator or OO (meaning you have your own truck). Owner-Operator truckers make a lot more per mile, but often EARN LESS, after deducting all the costs (fuel, maintenance, insurance/bonding, other overhead).
As a felon without experience, you can start at around $0.38-0.40 per mile
Local trucking jobs
This is self explanatory – you come home every night. A good example of a local truck driving job is working for UPS or FedEx
Typical hourly rates in US are between $12 and $29 per hour. Clearly, there is a huge difference there, but the average is around $19 per hr (50th percentile so to say).
If you have a felony conviction and no prior experience, your starting pay rate will most likely be $12-14 per hour.

Walmart Truck Driving Jobs For Felons
Trucking jobs at Walmart are considered to be some of the best in the industry. This is because Walmart is known to pay the highest salaries to its OTR drivers.
According to a CBS News report issued in January 2019, Walmart will pay an average of $87,500 to its first year drivers. Truckers who are working in the Northeast regions of the US will also earn a 5% premium on mileage as well as activity pay. Moreover, a quarterly bonus is given to any driver that maintains a safe driving record.
In addition to generous pay, Walmart offers an impressive benefits package to its truck drivers. It includes a 401K plan, excellent health and dental insurance, an associate stock purchase place, a discount center for shopping, estate guidance and other commuter benefits.
Walmart is the largest retailer in the US, with stores in every state and almost every city. As a result, truck drivers are needed to move millions of goods and products across state lines to thousands of store locations and distribution centers. Walmart employs about 8,000 drivers and its truck fleet is considered to be one of the largest and safest in the world.
A Walmart truck driver averages about 300 mile hauls per week, has a regular work schedule, and is home every week to reset and rest. Drivers are not responsible for loading and unloading of the merchandise.
This is a huge bonus, and is very different from any truck driving jobs. Many commercial truckers can be away from home for weeks, and only get a chance to relax at random rest stops and motels on the road.
To be considered for the job, you must have at least 2.5 years of prior driving experience as a Class A truck driver in the last three years. Also, you should not have any traffic violations or convictions for a DUI, reckless driving involving alcohol/drugs within the last ten years.
In addition to trucking, there are dozens of others felon friendly job opportunities at Walmart.

How to apply for a truck driving job with a felony conviction
The majority of large trucking companies have an online application that you need to fill out.
Before you go to fill it out, have the following information on hand:
– Social Security Number
– All your residential addresses over the past 3 years
– Current drivers license number
– Drivers license history for the past 3 years
– History of employment (up to 10 years)
– History of traffic accidents, violations, and / or convictions during the last 5 years (includes any – DUI, reckless driving convictions and license suspensions)
– Any military service history
As we said before, having a criminal record or a felony conviction WILL NOT disqualify you from getting hired. However, you need to be 100 % honest about your history, when you are filling out the application.
Do realize that every company you apply with is required by law to conduct a very thorough background check on all applicants. So they will discover everything you may want to hide after digging through your driving history and all related arrests/convictions.
But again, the good news is that if your felony is does not involve a motor vehicle in any way, you have a strong chance at being employed.
If you don’t have a CDL, but have an excellent driving record, consider ride-sharing driving such as Lyft or Uber. Find out whether Lyft and Uber hire felons, and what the job requirements are.
Become a Lyft Driver & Get up-to $2,000 Signup Bonus!
Both Lyft and Uber are in need of new drivers, and offer excellent signup bonuses!
Another piece of good news is that because there is such a shortage of professional truck drivers, many big companies are willing to hire people who only have a CDL learners permit and can provide training as well as help with obtaining the license.
Truck Driving Job Outlook For 2022-2025
Currently, there are as many as 200,000+ long haul trucker positions open across the US. By 2023, the number of open positions is expected to reach 330,000!
While trucking, especially OTR, is a very hard, exhausting and often depressing job, its in great demand. This is because trucker turnover is extremely high.
The median age of a truck driver is 47 years old, and the industry is having an extremely difficult time recruiting and retaining young drivers.
This means that if you have a felony and are struggling to find steady employment, this may be a good opportunity for you.
Moreover, trucker salaries are growing at a rate of 8-12% per year, which is huge considering the fact that most other professions see an annual salary increase of around 0.5%.
There are also handsome sign-on bonuses that large trucking companies offer to recruit drivers. Typically, these can range from $1,500 -3,500. However, an experienced OTR driver can get a huge sign up bonus of up to $10,000.
For example, Roehl Transport offers to pay $10,000 sign on bonus to experienced OTR truckers with a CDL Class A license. You get paid the first $500 bonus after completing the first assignment, and then bonuses in the increments of $500 for every 10,000 you drive, until you reach a total of $10,000
Some negative features of OTR work
For many people who start driving long haul trucks, there is a huge lifestyle change that requires a serious mental and physical adjustment:
– For weeks at a time, day and night, you are crammed into a tiny space the size of a closet
– Tremendous pressure of making the delivery safely and on time
– Erratic sleep patterns, many truckers drive at night
– You spend the majority of your time alone, and its easy to get lonely and depressed
– It may be hard to be away from family and friends for weeks at a time
Can A Female Felon Get A Job As A Truck Driver?
Yes!!! In fact, the truck driving industry is aggressively recruiting female drivers, offering large sign-up bonuses, training, and assistance paying for truck driving courses. Currently, there are only 6% of women employed as truck drivers.
This means that if you are a woman with a felony, and think you may be cut out for this lifestyle, trucking can become a steady source of income. This is an especially good opportunity if you are young, single and don’t have kids.
Other Types Of Driver Jobs For Felons
If trucking is not exactly your dream vocation, but you do like driving, there are a few other opportunities to explore:
–Tow Truck Driver – Many towing companies are small owner-operated outfits, and do NOT perform background checks.
In fact, they would prefer someone with “experience” in dealing with unpleasant situations. You do need a CDL class A to drive a tow truck.
Ride Share Driver – can felons drive for companies like Lyft or Uber? … Hint – yes with limitations!
Note: I’m on Phrobation but I am allowed to travel. I check in ( to Phrobation online).
Recently graduated from TDT, 4/21/2017. I have felons from 1993, and a misdemeanor assault from 2016, I talked to several recruiters and filled out many applications. No one will hire me. Any suggestions please?
So when it is posted that if your felony is more than “X” many years – does that mean from the date of conviction, or since you are out of prison, or since you are off parole? That info would be helpful to those that want to apply
Sam, each company has it’s own interpretation, but I’d say fro date of release – not date of conviction… that just would not make any sense
Yes it should count from the date of conviction not later. Read up on the FCRA and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But keep in mind criminal convictions can be looked up for life. Some states only allow 7 years back and the clock starts on date of conviction.
I don’t understand this ridiculous system. I change for the good still get no chance, got caught in 2011 for possession of class A pleaded guilty got probation. Was tough to get a regular job so I went back to what I know best, long story short I achieved more than before in the game but for me family meant more than money. Made a lot of money so I decided to go straight again got my CDL class A this year and still can’t prosper in this. Sometimes I tell myself a working man is a sucker. WTF!!!!
I’m on parole for simple robbery I got my CDL in December 2015 and I can’t find a job
I have a assault charge with a weapon it’s 10 years old can I still go 2 school 2 get my cdl I live in mississippi an what school will take me.
Donald, I think you should have no problem going to school and getting CDL … most trucking companies that are strict about felonies, have limits at 10 years… meaning that if your felony is 10 years or older, its like you never had one (to these companies) … and again – these are the most strict ones. Majority are at 3-5 year or don’t much care about your felony.
CDL schools definitely don’t care about felonies. They just want you to take the course.
Good luck
From what I have researched, any violent crime will restrict any chance of finding work anywhere. I believe that it isn’t impossible to find work, you just may not find your dream job. I have a felony conviction going on 15 years. I went back to school and earned an associates degree. Worked for three years, then took another job. They did a background check on me and rescinded their offer. This happened three times with three different employers within a 4 week period. Looking into trucking because I used to drive years ago but after reading these posts, doesn’t look too promising.
Tim, so I know manual labor is not for everyone, but in roofing and construction in general there is pretty much no background checks …
Worth a try if you’re not afraid of heights and can do physical work
Ace training center in Byram that’s the one I went to bra
I have to see first hand the battle my better half deals with when trying to get a trucking job. Let me give you a little background, he’s prior military and was wounded in war. He ended up beating the shit out of a guy who hit a woman in front of him and let’s just say, he went to prison and a felony. This is just shy of 7 years old now and gets doors shut on him all the time. He’s stronger, more capable and has more honesty and integrity than any man I’ve ever known. He’s busted his ass to survive in life and I’m fed up with it being nothing but small companies that will hire him and since they are on paper logs, the drivers end up playing with their books just to make delivery, backhaul or picking up the next load. Just because a felony is over 10 years, which is the policy for many major companies that actually have to abide by DOT rules and regulations, doesn’t mean those individuals are better or more rehabilitated. Some convictions aren’t forgivable, but for the most part, I’d rather have felons working for me then the average Joe. This is simply because felons work harder than most as they always have to show they’re worthy or better than a damn conviction. This shouldn’t have to dictate who someone is or their level of integrity and commitment nor should they have to bare discrimination or be branded with a Scarlett letter so to speak. Felony or not, you deserve the same opportunity to get excellent pay and benefits too! This has to change…. companies are missing out on dedicated, hard working individuals just because of a label.
its not because of a label that he’s being denied. he has a violent crime that’s y he has this issue. quit trying to make him sound like a hero
I have a few felonies going back 20 yrs a couple of them I caught while serving my time. My life is different but two years ago I got a misd. Dui conviction for marijuana. I didn’t have a dl then so it doesn’t show on my DVR but it shows as a misd. Conviction. I just got my cdl A how can I start my career no one will touch me
I work for a construction company with a Class B CDL. Construction companies could care less if your an ex-felon. But it’s hard work.
IN 1996 I was convicted of eluting police and possession of a weapon ,I served my time ..and released in 2001..I recently lost my job of 9 yr due to an injury that I settle out in court. So I decided to appoint myself to school and graduated from a 200 hr school. And I’ve been applying and I can’t seem to get a job in this industry..
If anyone need a good hand please let me know thank
I’m a x felon I got a manufacturing charge in 04 but never fell a drug test and have been clean for 15 years and drove tucks for 40 years got experience in every field of trucks but still hard to find a job I’m very reliable hand just can’t get a chance to prove I’m clean
I want to find a truck school and that I could go to the first job placement appointment I live in Baker City Oregon so it’s going to be hard to be one that has room and board I recently broke my back in a motorcycle accident my fault but I am healing up I just don’t think I can go back to doing what I used to and I’ve always wanted to drive plus I have a good company that will hire me after I have the experience
I have several non-violent felonies. I picked all of them up behind my partying and drug use. Now I’m clean and l have always loved to drive trucks, but now my past is interfering with my lively hood. We need laws that will give ex-offenders who have been rehabilitated a chance. It’s hard to prove you’ve changed when companies won’t even look at you.
I have a felony of selling a controlled substance over 10 yrs ago. I am about to graduate truck driving school, and scared to death i wont find a good job. Some of the companies on this list just said no flat out. What do i do?
Did you find anything yet?
I’m a week away from obtaining my CDL, and the comments on here are uplifting. My felony is three years old and it’s been a rough struggle these past four months; I couldn’t even find work through a temp service, yet I refuse to give up hope that one day some employer will open hie door to allow me to maximize my potential in representing their company. Thanks for the tidbit about employers receiving tax breaks in hiring felons, I believe that would work to my advantage.
You still looking for cdl work?
I just did 10 years and I am having a very hard time getting any company to even entertain the notion of giving me a chance. Any advisd.
Sincerely Brad

So, many companies say they don’t have a problem with a person having a felony but we it get to them looking into the back ground u always hear the opposite OH sorry we can’t hire you at this time try back in a few months and good look with your search.
I think it’s sad that people have lost their faith to the human race.they don’t think a person can learn from a mistake.mistakes are part of the learning process and part of life.dont go by the mistakes people make go by the good things they do
There are a lot of opportunities for people who have felonies especially if they are more than 5 years old another key piece of information that may help with getting a driving job in smaller companies is that the federal government gives tax breaks to companies who hire a person with a conviction in the last 10 years so it might help if you let employers know this ( any industry. Manufacturing, clerical, construction ect.) another thing is never give up you will eventually find the right job as long as you put forth your absolute best effort. I have a felony from 7 years ago and I understand first hand how discouraging and hard it can be to find the best fit for you. You may even go through a couple jobs before finding the best one. I work for a small manufacturing company in southern ohio who decided to give me a chance 3 years ago and it payed off. They payed for my CDL and I got promoted to supervisor a year ago. with that being said when the opportunity does present itself work and try your absolute hardest and know that small efforts only get you small results and being honest upfront and remorseful for your actions in the past shows employers that they can possibly help you on your road to success because that’s the way I look at the people I interview who have convictions
Well shoot i’m from canton. Hook me with the plug.
I’m looking for a job now. I been running tankers and the oil field has gone to nothing. I have a felony from 2004 never had a ticket never failed a random or any other test. I applied at J.B. Hunt with 16yrs exp. and they see I am accident free. I have been a O/O and the hurricane Harvey flooded my truck and just paid it off. I just had a home built since then and I’m looking for a company who doesn’t judge me by a mistake when I was 17yrs old. I do have my twic and port badge. If you know a good company plz let me know
The Missouri Department of Corrections now offers truck driver training at the Northeast Correctional Center in Bowling Green, Mo. We use a simulator purchased from Doron to implement the curriculum. The Missouri Highway Patrol proctor’s the written portion of the CDL exam within the institution. We have 20 graduates who are nearing release looking for companies that will provide the actual driving portion of the training.
Lets pretend for a moment, its the week before you got caught for whatever it was you did wrong. Suppose you had filled out an application for a job and was asked on the application if you had ever been convicted of a felony, and you honestly answered that as truthfully NO ! Such an answer would have been 100% honest, because indeed, at that point in time, when the question was asked, had not been caught, or convicted of a felony. Even though felonious activity had occurred by you, your application would have appeared as clean as fresh snow…Innocent of conviction. “Innocence of conviction” is not the same as innocent of wrong doing. But on an application, it flies. Employers are oh so quick to misjudge and mislead themselves to believing that a persons character based on LACK of conviction some how makes that person more trustworthy than an ex-con , when indeed most times it doesn’t. An employer will lend a never convicted person a “Benefit of Clearance”, when indeed they could very well be sitting in the presence of a non-caught-non-convicted, ax-murderer, and not have any inkling of it, because after all, “they have a clean record”! At least as employers are concerned, an ex-felon knows…the employer knows… their background… and the felon knows they will be the first suspected in any fowl play regardless of who’s involved (even “without evidence”- connecting them ) so the felon from the get-go holds himself to a higher more transparent-standard of behavior than that of his peers because one aspect, “MIGHT,…just might,… be the one thing that saves him from suspicion when things get ugly. He knows how easy its going to be to blame him, even if he’s innocent. So the felon is more likely to do everything exactly by the book because he knows that end the end, that’s what will save him. Where as the ax-murder realizes he’s fling under the radar of suspicion and hence can get away with murder because he has a clean record ( so far ) after all.
You my friend have a great mind
i am a ex felon, but i have a track record of rehabilitation for the last 20 years and still counting

So if I failed a D.O.T. Piss test first time ever who’ll hire me now?
