List Of Jobs That Hire Felons In 2024
Many people with a criminal record come to us and ask “Are there any good jobs for felons?”
The short and reassuring answer is – Yes, of course there are companies that hire felons! The long answer is that you need to know what type of work you have the best chances of getting, because MANY jobs are not open to ex cons.
When you are out looking for work, your first instinct may be to apply for a job at a local big box store, such as Walmart, Costco (which has a $14/hr starting pay), Home Depot, etc. or a fast food chain restaurant, such as McDonald’s or KFC, etc.
You may be disappointed and shocked when all of these places turn you down. The reason is simple: these are big corporations and their hiring policies is not felon-friendly. They have hundreds of other applicants to choose from who don’t have a criminal past.
What Are The Best Jobs For felons?
Now you may wonder – are there jobs where I have a stronger chance of being hired with a felony?
Indeed, there are! Any job where you don’t have direct contact with customers is a better fit for a felon. The good news is that these jobs often pay better ($12-30 per hour) and usually require some technical skills and/or knowledge.
For example, many factories like to employ ex-cons, because these companies take advantage of the federal tax breaks they receive from hiring a felon.
Don’t worry, your opportunities are not limited to factories alone. Other positions such as a truck driver, electrician/plumber apprentice, building/roofing contractor, taxi driver, food or package delivery, construction and trade jobs, data support/analyst, etc may be available, if you have the right skills and are willing to learn.
Moreover, if you get higher education you will be more likely to land a job despite your felonies. Mostly because those with an education have a broader range of skills and past professional experience.
If you don’t have an education, we strongly recommend taking classes at a local technical college or trade school.
Many offenders that we know are taking engineering classes. Within a year they are working in a factory making around $15-17 an hour. We have seen this time and time again.
Coding, computer programming, accounting and graphic design skills are also in high demand in the current work market place.
Here is a list of additional employment opportunities to consider
- Freelance Jobs for Felons
- Roofing Jobs for Felons
- Temp Agency Jobs for Felons
- Medical Jobs for Felons
When you look for jobs, try to apply to places that may skip the background check or will do a very limited one.
As you may have already discovered, failing the criminal background check is the SINGLE factor that prevents most felons from finding decent paying employment, or any job at all for that matter!
Small businesses that employ felons
It may come as a surprise, but many small owner operated business are often willing to give felons another chance. Of course, this depends on what your past crime is, the circumstances around it, as well as your overall knowledge and skills.
As you will see from the list, these business are usually professional trade or construction companies, that are always looking for new workers. The owner wants to see someone honest, very hard working, punctual, and eager to learn new skills.
If you are willing to get on the job training, eventually you can get a much better paying job at this or a different (larger) company as a foreman or project manager ($30+ per hour).

* Getting a job at Lyft / Uber is a hit or miss for most felons. While basic requirements for employment state that non-violent criminal record older than (5-7) years is ok, many of our readers report that they have to jump through additional hoops, once their background check comes in.
Also, even if you get accepted to drive for a Ride Sharing service, you need a fairly recent vehicle.
Oil companies hiring felons
If none of the local companies want to hire you because of your felony conviction, consider going to work for an oil company. They are more open to hiring felons and the pay is very high ($30 per hour+) because these are very challenging jobs and very few people want them.
Many companies, such as ExxonMobile, also offer apprenticeships and on the job training to attract candidates that are interested in these jobs.
Jobs in the oil/fracking industry include:
Fracking equipment operator
Oil field operator
Derrick hand
Floorhand/leasehand/roustabout
Mechanical assembler
Hot oil operator
Tank driver
Truck driver
Water transfer operator
The oil industry is booming in the US and its continuously creating new jobs to keep up with the growing demand for oil.
This is good news for felons looking for work, because they have a much higher chance of getting hired in the oil sector, compared to other industries.
List of oil companies that accept employees with felony convictions
The following fracking oil companies are hiring felons to fill many on the positions that are currently in extremely high demand in the fracking industry.
ExxonMobile
Chevron
Halliburton
Conoco Phillips
ATI
Eastern Propane
ENSERVCO
Bosque Systems
Honstein Oil and Distributing
Arnold Oil Company Fuels
Most of the oil jobs are located in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, California, Utah, Colorado, North Dakota, Wyoming, New Mexico and Alaska.
Passing The Background Check For Employment
What you need to understand is that most entry-level, minimum wage positions (under $11-12 per hour) in big corporations are much harder for felons to get than similar jobs in a smaller company.
This is because in most of these jobs, be it retail or food service, you will need to have direct contact with customers. Employers get very nervous about this and don’t want to run the risk of exposing their clients to a felon.
Another reason of course is the background check. Even if you do well on the interview, the corporate background check is very extensive, and the policy is usually to turn down everyone who fails the background check.
Even if its been 10 years or more since your conviction, many of these jobs will turn you down, even though on their applications they state that they are an equal opportunity employer. This is because many states report criminal charges that over 10 years old and these still show up on the background check.
Having said this, you should still APPLY to all local open positions in the area, where you would be qualified to work. The more you apply, the higher your chances that someone will hire you, despite the felony charges.
In many instances, if you have a marketable skill (such as computer related, or construction), it will often be easier to do freelance work online, or start your own business. In this case, you can avoid the background check all together.
Improving Credit Can Help A felon Get A Better Job
A little known secret is that many companies like to run a credit check on a potential applicant to see if they have good credit. This indicator helps hiring managers determine how trustworthy someone is.
Of course, many felons struggle with really poor credit and have credit scores that are bellow 300!!!! This fact in addition to the background check really lowers a felon’s chances of getting a job.
However, while there is very little most ex cons can do about their background check, there is A LOT to be done about repairing your poor credit. Yes its very hard and takes mindful spending, time and effort. However, many people have bounced back from really bad credit and even bankruptcy, so you can do it if you put your mind to it.
If you are determined to fix your credit, read our step by step guide on how to get from a low to an excellent credit score.
Best of luck in your job search. Let us know your experience with any of the above companies, or a company that we should add to this list.
If this article has helped you out in anyway please share it on your social media or email it to other felons that you may know. Together we can find good work and get a fresh start in our lives!
I was convicted of larceny 18 years ago I’m hired at a school for genuine foods I was honest about my conviction and start mon but I’m scared they will pull there offer for job does anybody know if genuine foods hire felons
I live in South Texas. I was convicted of s*xual assault and indecency back in 2005. They were bogus charges and my court appointed attorneys didn’t represent me the way they were supposed to. I was released from TDCJ the first time in 11/2010 after doing 5 straight. I violated my PROBATION (yes probation) due to missing my reporting of a new job by just days. My youngest son is an ASPIE and was having a hard time adjusting to school and he hated the house where we lived. We had to move to a different city. I was arrested for sleeping in an unregistered house. I got another 5 piece. I’ve been out since 8/2019 and can’t find a decent job to support my family and pay child support. No one will hire s*x offenders down here. If anyone knows of any business that does, please hit me up.
I know UPS does (up here in PA) see if there’s a UPS around you.
UPS does here in PA….see if there’s a UPS plant by you.
I’m a 62 year old who was charged with Forgery of a financial institution, when I tried to cash a check in my name that I received in the mail. But instead of letting me know 4hat the check wasn’t good ul, they called the police and arrested me, then the DA and the judge decided that I needed to go to place that was to rehab women, but due to my health issues I was denied by the facility and the judge gave me the only option for me be sentence to was “state jail” which was nor any better in caring for my health issues, anyway after I got released and tried to find work as a hostess at a restaurant, I was told they could not and would not hire me because of my criminal background. That was almost 5 years ago. I’m only trying to supplement my disability income so that I can live a so what normal life. Presently I am on a 5 year adjudication probation because of a so called friend of my son had dropped her dope pipe in the car I was driving and I was told that it wasn’t even enough to call a quarter gram worth of dope. But I got the charge because I was the driver , and she had already left the car before I got stopped by the police. I know that here in East texas the law is very strict and even overly judgemental. The criminal judge just loves to set anyone regardless if they are innocent or not. He is what we call the hanging judge in his court you are already guilty . But he tells everyone that they must go and find a job or end up back in his court room. Yet, no one will hire an elderly ,disabled and convicted and on probation woman that has health issues that causes heart problems to work . So I tried doing house cleaning until I fell and broke my neck and can no longer do that work either. . I’m have alot of experience in the medical field ,restaurant field, and dealing in customer services. However I have been denied working even the simplest kind of jobs and that’s usually after the background check has been done. Discrimination is the best way ro say it. Liars when they claim to give second chances. Even my son who has 4 times convicted and sent to prison for different things, finally found a job and only been there for one month . He has a record going back as far back as 30 years . Hasn’t worked for nearly 7 years until now . But he’s young and might end up going back due to pending trumped up charges that the same judge and local police have charged him with. Wrong place at the wrong time. I’m praying his charges are dropped and a public announcement is made to clear his name . But I don’t think it will happen watch guys for the s*x offender sting operation that the police do in your area . Heads up. Leave the girls alone!! Especially on dating website.
Just a quick question.. I have a pending felony charge that will most likely drop to a misdemeanor but I have been offered a job that requires fingerprinting so I know that will show everything.. this felony isn’t a violent charge at all. How can I pretty much beg them to not turn me down for this
I wish I knew the answer to this. If you even read this, did you end up getting the job? I need a little hope here.
I worked in the health care field was recently charged with abuse over money and food. When I wasn’t just taking it. It was where I would buy something for client and they would turn around and pay back by buying me something. Now I have abuse charges on my record and having trouble finding a job. Any suggestions on where I could get one at
My son was convicted of a felony 6 years ago…not a violent one. A conviction that resulted from being a heroin addict. He has since become clean & sober and never went to prison. He was placed on probation for 5 years. Once clean, he started the job hunting process but on his record, the conviction showed as a felony. Needless to say, he has not found a steady job since. In March of this year, he had a court date. Given that he’s kept his “nose” clean the judge dropped probation and told him that she was also reducing his felony to a misdemeanor. He recently applied for a job at Amazon (job was offered to him pending background check). That was over 4 weeks ago and when he calls, they tell him it’s still in process. Does anyone know how long background checks take, especially with major corporations these days? It used to be just a few days. He’s hanging his heart on this position. Any response of suggestions will be appreciated.
Hi, yeah I have the same thing going on now. It’s been a month since I went for the fingerprinting. Now I’m just getting an email stating they cannot hire me.
When I first got out and was applying I was turned down a lot. Amazon denied me but I was still on parole m. So may have been too soon. And they didn’t tell me for over three weeks after my background check. Same with Sam’s Wholesale. But then reapplied when I got off parole and they hired me. Schnucks grocers also hired me and didn’t do a background check. This was during Covid tho. Good luck!
Oregon Measure 110 reclassifies personal possession of small amounts of drugs from a Class A misdemeanor to no more than a violation. Now, instead of arrest, possession will result in either a $100 fine or a health assessment, including a substance use disorder screening by a certified counselor. The measure funds treatment and other services through a portion of the substantial tax revenue Oregon is receiving as a result of cannabis legalization. It also reduces penalties for possession of larger quantities of drugs, reducing most offenses from felonies to misdemeanors.
Human Rights Watch supported the measure and has long advocated for states and the federal government to decriminalize the use and possession for personal use of all drugs and focus instead on harm reduction and health-based approaches to problematic substance use.
Every state needs this. I call bullshit on drug addicts getting caught with a small amount of drugs and getting felonies that ruin their life’s while the police get paid a salary for arresting the jails, judge, attorney, P.O. all on the backs of a addict
Some jails in Arizona charge for meals in jail to inmates
The PO gets money for 3 years! Those phone and comasarry companies at all jail facility s charge family up the ying yang. Everybody is making money off a drug addict. What a heartless society money grubbing off a addict
Why can’t all states follow suit
My son is currently incarcerated but coming home end of Sept. He was charged with no violent rape. She was living with her boyfriend, he set up camera and caught my son and his gf, she noticed the camera and started yelling at my son screaming rape so she wouldn’t get in trouble with her bf.. he made her go to hospital for rape kit test, my son and her were both doing drugs on this day And SHE was the one calling my son to come over ( I have the many texts she sent him that day and every day leading up to this day)! Tried to show her bf but he denied them. My son ended up in prison cuz he took a plea deal instead of a jury trial. Even thou we could prove that day to be consensual the courts and my son’s attorney wouldn’t even look at them! So much for court appointed attorneys huh. Anyway my son was arrested, tried and sent to prison. That charge has since dropped off and he’s currently serving for probation violation now.
He’s asked me to look into companies who hire felons, he’s 26 years old, been in prison over a year now. His crime wasn’t considered violent but from what I’ve read in some of these comments he stands no chance of finding suitable work to support himself & his fiance and 3 year old son.
Does anyone know of any employers who hire on this charge? My son is a great person and very committed and a extremely hard worker. He learns quick and applies himself 110%..
Oil companies and construction companies are always hiring.
I was on Megan’s Law last night and noticed a lot of s*x offenders working in my area all at the same place….it’s the UPS plant (warehouse). If there’s one around you I’d try that.
You can add Wex Bank to the list of companies that hire felons. They hired me with my felony record. And they’re very nice.
If I can ask what we’re your felonies because I’ve been offered a position from WEX not their bank though. Was it a non violent crime ?
Well i recently was charged with a felony in March of 2020 because of my ex wanted to cheat on me but It’s still pending, i have court on the 26th but I’m scared that i might get charged behind something that i didn’t even do.. it’s hard for me to find a job, get into my own place or anything in that matter.. I’ve been sleeping in my car, with family & friends & etc.. My charge was impending breathing when i never put my hands on my wife at that time.. i only sent a text but it wasn’t anything threating to her.. She dropped the charges but the State of Texas picked it up for a charge that happen back in Louisiana after i was the one who called the police on her for putting her hands on me & they took me instead but the judge threw it out.. I just want this gone & a divorce.. I haven’t talked to my attorney since February when he told me i didn’t have to show up for court & if it wasn’t for a job doing my background check i wouldn’t know anything about court coming up.. i just want all this to get dropped! We are no longer together..
I am about to give up. I have spent a fortune in gas looking for a job for nothing. I have a masters degree in information systems and 25 years experience. I had single possession charge from 7 years ago and nothing else. Ridiculous and sad..
Cindy
If you are IT, in most cases, you can easily get work freelance websites (more info here: https://www.hirefelons.org/freelance-jobs-felons/ )
You don’t need to drive anywhere – you can do all the work remotely. There is no background checks – clients only care about quality of work and in many cases price, but it depends on what kind of work you do.
There are a lot of people in the US and around the world who make full-time living doing freelance work.
Best of luck.
Walmart, price chopper,Stewart’s, Cumberland farms lowes, home depot. , examples would not hire me , felon
I see a lot of you Guys’ comments regarding who will or will not hire you because of Felony Convictions. True, some companies won’t hire you, but a lot will because they receive Tax Breaks for hiring felons.
Some of the ways for a felon to get hired or even a better job.
1.) Check with your State’s Employment Division to see if they Have a Program that will Insure and Bond felons for employment. Missouri has one that I know of. Where one the company hires the Felon, the State will automatically Insure and Bond the Felon, to Insure the employer that the Felon is trustworthy. The only thing needed is a check stub from the employer and a copy of the Felony Convictions. It does not matter what the job is, the State will insure and Bond the Felon.
2. Get into the Abatement and/or Environmental Abatement arena. I know several Felons that work in that field. Some with murder and drug convictions.
3. Learn to Weld
4. Get into the Computer Programming arena, teach yourself to program computers.
***I say these things because I too am a Felon. I served three sentences in the Department of Corrections.
All of the things I listed herein, I tried them and they worked for me.
Upon release, after serving 5 calendar years, I earned two Degrees, an MBA and Computer Science.
I got a job working for a company Developing Software for the U.S. AirForce for 13 years, I became an adjunct Professor at several Colleges and a University, I worked for Boatmans Bank in the HR Department, I worked for Union Pacific Railroad in the (O.S.S.Department), I worked at Walmart as a Store Manager, and even in the Asbestos Abatement arena making $58.77 and hour. (it’s do-able.)
U.S. Steel will hire Felons, so will Medline Industries (warehouse), as well as
Amazon.
Several of my associates and students are felons, and they are doing well. Guys, you just have to adapt, and get out of your comfort zones. General Motors will hire Felons, I personally know a Registered S*x Offender, a drug dealer, a Forgerer, a Thief and a that works there car thief that works for GM right now.
Further,…I have worked at every company I’ve listed herein.
I was not fired from any of the jobs listed herein for felony convictions. I left those jobs when I found something better. Now I work for myself.
Hi Bogart,
I don’t know if you are open to connecting but I would love and appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. I have a pending charge and I am in the phase of transitioning and adapting. I have already made it all the way through school and unfortunately, this has happened to me before my career really had the chance of taking off. My attorney thinks I should now pursue law school haha. Anyways at the very least thank you for your positive words of encouragement. Best of luck to all.
Katie
I am in the same situation I have a pending larceny charge keeps getting pushed due to covid but my sister was holding product that was to be transferred from one store to another and it said a red sedan was seen and after further investigation I drive a red sedan but it’s on my parents property and my older sister and mother both have red sedans I’m not sure why they arrested me on larceny even the lawyer was beyond himself that I didn’t get conspiracy but anyways I’m having such a hard time finding work. Luckily I have a state phone and food stamps but my car is in repossession status which I’m living in so I’m so scared for the winter and it’s a pending charge that will get thrown out I’m sure as I have never been in trouble my whole life and I’m 40 years old. I’m struggling with credit cards during me but I’m not sure they are getting it that it’s not that I don’t want to pay them I can’t. I live in CT if anyone reads this and knows of any companies that will give me a break please reach out to me. Thank you all for reading/listening.
True, but what type of convictions did you sort of have ballpark? Many employers are very biased about certain types, especially if you’re labeled a S.O on any type of registry!
Bogart, You are giving me hope for my daughter who has done stupid stuff to land her a felony. She went back on drugs three times because she can’t find a job, got down on herself, depression, then self medication. But this time I’m hoping she follows my lead. In the past she wanted nothing to do with mom’s coaching! The online applications are the worst, the kids can’t get into seeing anyone for an interview. I don’t know if she’s lying or what .. but she said every time she called pizza places, grocery stores, etc they said they didn’t see her resume/application online. I don’t know how to help. Also.. wish there were horse farms in CT or RI that would take her on. That would be the place for her.
Hi. What position do they work at GM? My fiancé’ is a felon and he’s due off of parole in less than 30 days. He recently was rescinded from a sales position after the background check came back. Please advise.
I am a Registered Nurse with over twenty years of direct patient care in various specialties. In 2015 I was convicted of a third DWI which in the state of is a misdemeanor that is automatically enhanced to a Felony. The prior convictions were 12 and 13 years prior. I was asked to surrender my license by the Texas State Board of Nurses but refused and retained a lawyer to represent me before the board and was able to retain my license with probation. I have been unable to find employment since my conviction in 2015. I am a great nurse and never came to work under the influence nor did I ever receive any kind of reprimand in 20 years. I have even been turned down work at grocery stores! I’m convinced that I would find work if I could only get in front of a real live human being. Unfortunately, these days everything starts with online applications and therefore I never even make the cut for interviews. I would be very grateful for any suggestions. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.
Just because an employer is recognized as a second chance employer, it doesn’t mean they will hire everybody. I have a 20+ year conviction and it still follows me. It is considered a violent felony. People these days hold grudges and have personal feelings towards certain convictions/sins we commit or have done. I have had to quit many jobs due to death threats and threats themselves. When a person has the audacity to google a person’s name without even getting to know who the person is, they are the ones who usually have a problem. I just want to be able to go to work and do my job and be a productive member of society. When people who want to change are restricted from doing so, people have no right to complain when they are the ones who advocate for such restrictions.
I have a MBA in Accounting and was charged by an old employer with theft. Not only did he just charge me, he sent a hardship letter to judge, claiming I put his business in a hardship. He added 10% interest and a hardship cost. He is an attorney, he knew what he was doing. Trying to.find a job. I’m a single mother. My background and experience is in accounting. I can not afford to pay the restitution, but finished probation with 20+ stipulations. I was discharged unsatisfactory bc I still had a restitution balance. I can’t even seal my records. Ugh.
I am in a similar situation as you. In 2010 I was convicted for credit card fraud, I wasn’t the one who stole the card. My ex did. Anyway mine can’t be sealed or expunged either because of it being adjudicated guilty. I was trying to go to nursing school and never even knew I was a convicted felon intil recently.
I’m 28 years old went to prison at age 19 for a drug sale o just got out prison it’s very hard to find a good paying job as a felon it’s even more difficult to get help with housing
I have two felony convictions on my record. One is a theft charge in Minnesota from almost 18 years ago. The other is an accessory after the fact in Massachusetts which is 13 years old. I basically got worn down by the courts and a public defender who didn’t really care. So I took a plea. I have absolutely nothing else on my record. I have been a maintenance tech with my current employer for almost 5 years now. When I was hired there was no background check performed. Nor was I asked about anything. Application or interview. Now, they are starting background checks.
I am a total basket case on this. Right before the holidays and I am in danger of losing my job. I have given them no reason to fire me in the last 5 years.
A couple of dumb mistakes from over a decade ago and I am still being penalized.
Amazon does not hire felons. Neither does Walmart and Target. They all refused me for being a “violent felon” when I was in fact acquitted of felonious assault. I literally beat five out of six charges, the usual overcharge to force you to agree to a plea bargain, with the only conviction being for failing to surrender to a charge I was acquitted of. “Panicing the police”. No matter no one will touch me now and the court refuses to expunge the aquitials in a big fuck you for me daring to defend myself in front of a jury. I’m 50 years old with a life of public service and the court and society would rather I just off myself.
I am a convicted felon for poss of drugs. State jail felony .. no prison. 5yr probation and cannot find a degree that will benefit me in the end. I graduated from nursing (lvn) 1190. I worked at the Sheriff Department 2yrs, then Adult Probation 6yrs. I feel like my life has been hell for the last 15years.. ANY SUGGESTIONS
I was a mortgage banker and have a felony DUI conviction, I can get my mortgage license back since it’s been over 7 years since my conviction date and the crime wasn’t monetary. Do you know any mortgage companies that would hire me?
This is discrimination. I was hired by a company that did not do a background check. I worked there for over six months with no problems, my manager even wanted to promote me…then bam I was fired. I just want a job and to put my life back together, is that too much to ask?
Discrimination, especially if you are nonviolent. But again, opportunities are still there I suppose.
What’s your job if I may ask?
I am a physician trying to get my license back. It is a state by state issue. Each state has its own licensure. Don’t know which states are best for me. But I do plan to move to South America eventually. There I can practice. My wife is from there, I speak Spanish. No problem down there.
I was hired by Big Lots without a background check as a cashier. I had been withe the company 6 months. In that time my manager decided she wanted to promote me and put in the paper work. They ran a background check and fired me. My manager is so pissed. We can’t figure out why they would fire me now. Every inch of the store is on camera. So it is not like anyone could do anything, plus they were so unconcerned about my background when they hire me, why should they care now? Even my PO talked to them, they don’t care. So I am back to trying to find someone that will hire me.
There is the possibility of moving to another country too for some of us.
I am a physician. Getting my medical license back in Texas may be difficult if not possible. Other states may be a possibility.
One of my options is to move to another country. I know moving to another country is not an option for most of us, but for me is is possible because I speak Spanish and have ties to South America via marriage. I already have an offer in SA to work for a mining company that needs physicians for their employees.
The good thing about medicine is that medical care is similar in all Western countries. The human body is the same.
