List Of Jobs That Hire Felons In 2024
Many people with a criminal record come to us and ask “Are there any good jobs for felons?”
The short and reassuring answer is – Yes, of course there are companies that hire felons! The long answer is that you need to know what type of work you have the best chances of getting, because MANY jobs are not open to ex cons.
When you are out looking for work, your first instinct may be to apply for a job at a local big box store, such as Walmart, Costco (which has a $14/hr starting pay), Home Depot, etc. or a fast food chain restaurant, such as McDonald’s or KFC, etc.
You may be disappointed and shocked when all of these places turn you down. The reason is simple: these are big corporations and their hiring policies is not felon-friendly. They have hundreds of other applicants to choose from who don’t have a criminal past.
What Are The Best Jobs For felons?
Now you may wonder – are there jobs where I have a stronger chance of being hired with a felony?
Indeed, there are! Any job where you don’t have direct contact with customers is a better fit for a felon. The good news is that these jobs often pay better ($12-30 per hour) and usually require some technical skills and/or knowledge.
For example, many factories like to employ ex-cons, because these companies take advantage of the federal tax breaks they receive from hiring a felon.
Don’t worry, your opportunities are not limited to factories alone. Other positions such as a truck driver, electrician/plumber apprentice, building/roofing contractor, taxi driver, food or package delivery, construction and trade jobs, data support/analyst, etc may be available, if you have the right skills and are willing to learn.
Moreover, if you get higher education you will be more likely to land a job despite your felonies. Mostly because those with an education have a broader range of skills and past professional experience.
If you don’t have an education, we strongly recommend taking classes at a local technical college or trade school.
Many offenders that we know are taking engineering classes. Within a year they are working in a factory making around $15-17 an hour. We have seen this time and time again.
Coding, computer programming, accounting and graphic design skills are also in high demand in the current work market place.
Here is a list of additional employment opportunities to consider
- Freelance Jobs for Felons
- Roofing Jobs for Felons
- Temp Agency Jobs for Felons
- Medical Jobs for Felons
When you look for jobs, try to apply to places that may skip the background check or will do a very limited one.
As you may have already discovered, failing the criminal background check is the SINGLE factor that prevents most felons from finding decent paying employment, or any job at all for that matter!
Small businesses that employ felons
It may come as a surprise, but many small owner operated business are often willing to give felons another chance. Of course, this depends on what your past crime is, the circumstances around it, as well as your overall knowledge and skills.
As you will see from the list, these business are usually professional trade or construction companies, that are always looking for new workers. The owner wants to see someone honest, very hard working, punctual, and eager to learn new skills.
If you are willing to get on the job training, eventually you can get a much better paying job at this or a different (larger) company as a foreman or project manager ($30+ per hour).

* Getting a job at Lyft / Uber is a hit or miss for most felons. While basic requirements for employment state that non-violent criminal record older than (5-7) years is ok, many of our readers report that they have to jump through additional hoops, once their background check comes in.
Also, even if you get accepted to drive for a Ride Sharing service, you need a fairly recent vehicle.
Oil companies hiring felons
If none of the local companies want to hire you because of your felony conviction, consider going to work for an oil company. They are more open to hiring felons and the pay is very high ($30 per hour+) because these are very challenging jobs and very few people want them.
Many companies, such as ExxonMobile, also offer apprenticeships and on the job training to attract candidates that are interested in these jobs.
Jobs in the oil/fracking industry include:
Fracking equipment operator
Oil field operator
Derrick hand
Floorhand/leasehand/roustabout
Mechanical assembler
Hot oil operator
Tank driver
Truck driver
Water transfer operator
The oil industry is booming in the US and its continuously creating new jobs to keep up with the growing demand for oil.
This is good news for felons looking for work, because they have a much higher chance of getting hired in the oil sector, compared to other industries.
List of oil companies that accept employees with felony convictions
The following fracking oil companies are hiring felons to fill many on the positions that are currently in extremely high demand in the fracking industry.
ExxonMobile
Chevron
Halliburton
Conoco Phillips
ATI
Eastern Propane
ENSERVCO
Bosque Systems
Honstein Oil and Distributing
Arnold Oil Company Fuels
Most of the oil jobs are located in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, California, Utah, Colorado, North Dakota, Wyoming, New Mexico and Alaska.
Passing The Background Check For Employment
What you need to understand is that most entry-level, minimum wage positions (under $11-12 per hour) in big corporations are much harder for felons to get than similar jobs in a smaller company.
This is because in most of these jobs, be it retail or food service, you will need to have direct contact with customers. Employers get very nervous about this and don’t want to run the risk of exposing their clients to a felon.
Another reason of course is the background check. Even if you do well on the interview, the corporate background check is very extensive, and the policy is usually to turn down everyone who fails the background check.
Even if its been 10 years or more since your conviction, many of these jobs will turn you down, even though on their applications they state that they are an equal opportunity employer. This is because many states report criminal charges that over 10 years old and these still show up on the background check.
Having said this, you should still APPLY to all local open positions in the area, where you would be qualified to work. The more you apply, the higher your chances that someone will hire you, despite the felony charges.
In many instances, if you have a marketable skill (such as computer related, or construction), it will often be easier to do freelance work online, or start your own business. In this case, you can avoid the background check all together.
Improving Credit Can Help A felon Get A Better Job
A little known secret is that many companies like to run a credit check on a potential applicant to see if they have good credit. This indicator helps hiring managers determine how trustworthy someone is.
Of course, many felons struggle with really poor credit and have credit scores that are bellow 300!!!! This fact in addition to the background check really lowers a felon’s chances of getting a job.
However, while there is very little most ex cons can do about their background check, there is A LOT to be done about repairing your poor credit. Yes its very hard and takes mindful spending, time and effort. However, many people have bounced back from really bad credit and even bankruptcy, so you can do it if you put your mind to it.
If you are determined to fix your credit, read our step by step guide on how to get from a low to an excellent credit score.
Best of luck in your job search. Let us know your experience with any of the above companies, or a company that we should add to this list.
If this article has helped you out in anyway please share it on your social media or email it to other felons that you may know. Together we can find good work and get a fresh start in our lives!

My name is Art. I was convicted in 2015 and have been on probation since. I lost my job in July and even though I have 30 years of experience and a bachelors degree I cannot get a job. Every agency and company asks if I can pass a background check and once they hear I have a record the process of getting a job stops. From what I have seen and read there is no hope of getting a job at all. I have been treated as though I am the worst person on the planet. My “Friends” have abandoned me, my family does not speak to me. I was offered a job and the day before I was to start the company rejected me because of my record. My lawyer feels that I have no chance to seal my records so I am completely screwed. I should be living on the streets soon which in the North East means dead of winter.
My daughter has a domestic on her record the police NEVER recorded her side of the events that happened. The mother-in-law held her hostage and beat the crap out of her with her daughter, this was when she was 22. Not convicted but her arrest record that shows up on the internet which means SHE WILL NEVER GET HIRED. She will be 30 went to school and I do not believe the state of New Mexico will ever allow her to have one job even as a car washer. Our governor has made damn sure you will not work with the laws on the books. She does not believe in pardons or expungements. Every person who has an arrest record or is an ex-felon has no hope in this state and if you wonder why crime is so high when you try to keep everyone down and cannot even get jobs cleaning offices there is a serious problem. As far as this site, you tell me what jobs will hire a person with an arrest record with 2 children who has tried in vain every online application she will be hired? As far as rehabilitation programs why do they exist if you are still a POS in society? You are judged on your past no matter how well you are doing in the present. Outlook bleak!!!!
I was just released from a 14 month prision term and have 5 yrs. Restricted probabtion. Since my release 6 wks ago i have applied to over 150 jobs online most which are on the places that hire felons list. I get called go to interview and wham once they ask that almighty question im no longer an interest to them. I have 2nd degree theft. I am so distraught over not being able to find work. My first and only arrest and i went to prision (wrong place. Wrong time). If i ever thought it was going to be a life sentence i would be somewhere in the jungles of africa!!! I am 57 and feel like just throwing in the towel especially after reading these stories. I wish i never left Boston, i am know stuck in this state (florida) that does not care or even give you a second chance but boy can they rack up fines and fees! Its all about $$$$. But i dont know how they think their gonna get it without giving us jobs.
I was hired straight out of prison as an apprentice out-side machinist.. If I had kept the job I would be making $25 an hour.. But, I put that construction experience and my education in economics to use and now I am now a self employed construction Estimator. I work on contract for many companies reviewing plans and creating bids.
Lots of construction companies pay good and the experience can be used to advance yourself. I was an expert on job safety, measuring work sites and operating on-site maxhining tools in two years.. Best advice: Never Give Up!
Here is my current situation. I am 24 years old, about a year ago I graduated from Florida State University with an international affairs degree concentrating in economics. Six months before I graduated from college, I plead no contest to a ‘possession of marijuana with intent to sell’ felony charge. The adjudication is withheld- I am not a convicted felon. And since I have never pled guilty to a crime, I can have this sealed from my criminal record (after the FDLE processes my application, takes approx. 6 months). After its sealed then I can get it expunged after a certain amount of years.
So I completed my probation along with all the bullsh*t that came along with it. As a person on felony probation, it is difficult to transfer your probation to another state. The first thing I did when I got off probation is move to California (where they recently legalized recreational marijuana).
I am fortunate in the fact I have money saved up and a place to live till my record clears. I had two great opportunities as an Account Management Trainee with Total Quality Logistics and Pittsburgh Logistics Systems at the time of college graduation. When I finally told them I was not going to be able to pass the background check …. Well lets just say I’m still unemployed . -Now I am applying for entry level jobs in the logistics and distribution industry (which is huge in the new area I live in). I have put major efforts into a 4 or 5 companies (one being Amazon) all of which have not given me an opportunity. However I am choosing to look at this as a challenge and a hardship that I can say I overcame.
I have read every post on here and I am among the lucky ones. I know this. To all of you CONVICTED of felonies- Do not let this stop you from reaching your dreams. It might be easy for me to say that, but I believe good things happen to good people. Once you find that job- work your a$$ off, show up everyday, and learn new things everyday that will better yourself in your new position. Everyone on here has the same problem. Whatever you do, don’t blame someone else or the government for your situation. It may be unfair but guess what?……… YES, correct answer ~life isn’t fair~. MAKE MISTAKES, LEARN FROM THEM, MOVE ON.
Look for work everyday, Do not give up. I found this article helpful, maybe someone else will too.

p.s. California drug tests test for weed! How stupid?! hahaha
I’m 19, on deffered probation for Burglary of a Building, I can vouch that IHOP is felon friendly, I just recently stopped working there because the overnights were killing me, mentally & physically. My complaint is that someone from McDonald’s called me after I had filled in an application to be a cook, not even dealing with customers, he asked some questions then asked if I’ve been convicted of a felony blahblahblah, which by Texas law I’m not, anyways I tell the guy I’m on deffered & he says he can’t go any further due to my “felony”. Out of all places to be so judgemental, McDonald’s?
Actually I think my age (55) may be a problem as well. Double shafted !!!
Ive been in prison over 25 years in oklahona. The only positions available to me is robbing stage coaches and banks. Wtf am I gonna do ? I’ve been looking for a job for 6 months. No luck.
I have been doing a tremendous amount of research in the hopes that I can help tackle this, what feels like, indescribably impossible task of finding someone that is willing to open their eyes and see the amazing person my fiance is instead of judging him and rejecting him based on his mistake from the past. It feels almost criminal, ironically enough, for companies to even be allowed to do this.
Any way, through my research I definitely found a common thread – those who reported positive feedback on various forums/ articles about having acquired a job as a felon didn’t have a theft felony. I maybe saw one or two felons with theft charges say they have, but those situations seemed more like a dumb stroke of luck rather than a common consensus that X business had a higher chance at hiring felons with a theft charge.
He has two felonies from 2012 for auto grand theft and drug possession. Every employer who hears the word theft pretty much shuts down and shuts him out, it wouldn’t matter how well their conversation was going beforehand or how much they liked him…theft seems to be the magic word that triggers their brain to go “he’s the worst of them all…reject”
There’s a lot of resources out there for felons it’s looking like…….all but those with theft : / I really need help here. It kills me to see him hurt from all this rejection.
I beg to differ if it says theft you have a better chance in Texas. I have and know several companies who will hire you and I know several people who got hired. The focus is if you have the determination not to give up then keep going companies look at what you have done since that point of time. I am a felon for forget and my misdemeanor say theft. I have worked at churches chicken, I have worked at call center 2 , and I have worked at Subway, dominoes pizza. I have worked at JDRF , I’ve worked at CPL and that was doing phlebotomy you have to strive for success.
Remember, you have the same rights as anyone. Don’t settle for less and don’t give your self false hope stay positive, and know that for every door that shuts you down there will always be one who will hire you. It’s all about you, that means your demeanor and what you have to offer.
I live in texas , I have two felonies for forgery, I looking for a call center job, I have over 25 years in experience , my felonies are 12 years old
I live in Texas and my felonies are 13 years old, I’m a customer service supervisor. Can you tell me what call center you worked at?
Please add quad graphics to the list. I have a non violent felony and they hired me at 15 an hour. I was there for 2 years..case by case…i know u cant have a lot of violents
Added Quad Graphics – Thanks for the tip
I’m from Chicago with 2 Class X felonies. One for drugs & the other was First Degree Attempt Murder do you know how horrible looks when it pop up to an interviewer or job… Yet, when I came home after doing 7+ plus I immediately started working with places that help ex-felons get jobs! I had a job within 30 days after coming home as a cook. Then I was hired on at a Senior Citizen home as a cook & was working at a McDonald’s where I became a Manager! I then found a better paying job in Warehousing & that’s the field I’m currently working in. Not only that I’ve recently relocated to Ky. where they have plenty of jobs & temp agencies. I’m now making $15 an hr. working a 10hr shift!!! And, what I’ve learn throughout my different jobs is that if you go in the door being Upfront & honest about your background have some class about yourself people will hire you! And, some places that I’ve work that didn’t hire felons had hired me, would give me a double interview to explain my cases then I was in the door!!! Nothing is impossible for us God makes a way!!! Its you who must put in the foot work & network with other people not just looking & applying online! I’m a go getter & a workaholic so I’ve been striving to move up & have a stress free job since I been home! In it’s been 8yr that I’ve been out of prison… What you must realize is that when one door closes another will open!!! Apply & go into these jobs with Confidence & humbleness!!! Good day everyone!
@ChiTown – Great to hear that you were able to find jobs, even with two Class X felonies … OMG … in case someone does not know – The Class X felony is, short of first degree murder, the most serious felony offense on the books in Illinois.
Yes – folks should not get discouraged – keep up the hope!
I believe God has greater things planned for me. I am blessed to have an income with disability benefits but I’m presently working on year for on my college degree. God turns the impossible to possible. I won’t give up. Thanks for your story such an encouragement. I pray that the box about convictions on apps here in Va does get banned bc a lot of people like myself deserve a chance. I have always been a hard worker since I was 16 I’m now 47. Ive swept floors, did labor jobs all to take care of my son. I accepted whatever job I was given but now its been a little harder landing a good job here in Va Commonwealth State. I’m still trusting God to open doors for me bc He has blessed me so far.
I recommend that you start a business and work in your purpose. Do what you love and the money will come to you. You can start a business with little to no money. If you’re not sure where to start, then contact me. I have a started a movement, to help ex-felons to have freedom in the real world.
I am interested after reading your post. I had a conspiracy and fraud charge with 18 months incarceration and been free for almost 2 years. I have a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and am hitting dead end after dead end. Like everyone I’m looking for guidance. I had a job since I was released until Christmas and was let go. I paid me due lost everything and am a better person than I ever was before. I don’t expect much of a response but no harm in trying. Thank you for your time.
Steve,
Good to hear from you, and sorry to hear about your troubles. Mechanical Engineering is a very broad field – please specify. May I suggest trying to get job at a factory, overseeing equipment … perhaps a smaller manufacturer… or maybe even in the solar field (a slight career change). I have a friend who works for a small company (with large clients such as ARM Holdings, Analog Devices, etc) as electronic engineer … but again the company is small, so HR / Corporate departments are not as big and/or stringent.
Maybe try some off the grid manufacturing firms. Like some companies that make industrial equipment or parts for big machines … Again – I think smaller companies may be more lenient. Research HR managers or some higher up employees (not managers) on LinkedIn – friend them … talk with them … comment on their posts or something. Then after some time ask if their company is hiring and if hey can recommend you. On your LinkedIn profile, put it that you are still employed by your last company. LinkedIn does not do BG checks… also there are MANY job offerings on LinkedIn … try to apply there.
Best of luck
Tasha hello I live in Va and my felony charge was in 2004 my sister and I got into a fight. I didn’t press charges against her but she filed charges on me. I served 4 mos in jail, 5 yrs probation with 3 yrs suspended. I did so good on probation I was released after 24 mos. First time ever getting in legal trouble bc I couldn’t afford an attorney I got stuck. Had I had an attorney my dad said me and my sister case would’ve been dismissed. Ive struggled to get a job. I worked in 2015 for temp agency paid me $11.50 an hr. The company wanted to hire me but corporate wouldn’t let them. Thank God I was approved for disability benefits bc I’d be in bad shape. The struggle is real but I’d like to start a business if you can help me. I’m Tracy
Hey Everyone, My name is Brandon and I am a convicted felon of a violent crime. I was incarcerated for 4 and a half years. Through that time I was able to obtain my high school diploma and college credits and upon release, I quickly enrolled in college. During school, I obtained a job and been working ever since then, been turned away from job after job due to background checks, but not anymore. I was released in 2011 and been on the grind ever since, not letting anything get in my path of success. Now I’m in the process of opening my company helping non-violent and violent offenders find employment the right way and gain the skills and knowledge that will help them live the quality of life they need to survive in today’s society. If you need any assistance, please reply and I will post my email address for contact purposes and hopefully I will be able to transform lives as it was done for me.

I need some help and advice
I need help for my daughter! She’s a smart, hard working individual with a felony forgery conviction. She lives in NYS
I am a convicted felon for finally defending myself against my abusive ex husband (20 plus years he physically abused me). A long story short, I took a job with Blue Cross Blue Shield in 2018 as a entry level position that I did in 2000. I’m a college grad. I need to be able to take care of my basic bills and food and my children but am tired of struggling.
Hey Brandon I’m in Colorado and I cant get a job because of my felonies. I need help
Hello I may be convicted of assault. I have court in 2 weeks. How am I ever going to get a job if I’m convicted.
Brandon i was was convicted of a violent crime aggravated arson 20 years ago still have problems getting employment
Hi I seen that u would help felons obtain work i need help???
Hi, Brandon. How are you? I could use some help for myself. I really need a good job but with my criminal record it is not going so well.
Hello Bandon, if you are still helping Ineed help for my son in Mississippi. Thank you
Frito lay does indeed hire felons i have one from 2006 and 2011 and a s*x offender. after going through an extremely long process of several interviews and ride alongs and phone calls and a letter saying they didn’t want to hire me, i was able to get a chance when they sent an email asking to explain charges and how my record affected past jobs. i almost gave up but after 3 months deal is done!! the position is sales service rep and pay is decent starting around 800 a week until i get my own route.
Where? And you make 800 a week that’s great! But do you have to have a driver’s license when you say until you get your own route I assume your driving a truck so what qualifications do I need?
I have a unclassified MISDEMEANOR conviction on my record from 2011 and I can’t get hired and keep a job anywhere! im going to hire a lawyer and contact the labor board as ive been hired by big y. stop and shop. staples and gone to orientation for them to fire me once my background check comes in. this is not legal and just goes to show how ridiculous society is these days. fuck these people its discrimination!
Try to get a job in construction (if you have strength and some handy skills). You can often get “on the job training” and may small business owners never do BG checks.
We just posted how felons can get jobs in roofing, but this applies to most construction trades.
Good luck
My name is Zak and I was convicted of obtaining narcotics by fraud (writing scripts) due to a bad drug habit in 2004. I was later convicted in federal court for being a felon in possession of a firearm back in 2009. I spent a total of over 6 years incarcerated in state and federal prison. I had almost given up trying to find a decent job but I believe God has other plans. I was finally hired by a fortune 500 company in the manufacturing industry right after thanksgiving 2018. The application did not ask so I did not offer up that I was a felon. After i was offered the job I had to fill out some paperwork that was for a background check. I called the plant manager and asked if o could speak with her and st that time I told her. She said they only go back 7 yrs. but if it showed up she would tell them that I had notified her but thank God it didnt. I guess what I’m trying to say is that no matter how desperate or hopeless you feel Never give up. I’m thanking God daily and I’m staying clean. I’ve found that when applying with bigger companies that you stand a better chance because of states like California and New York that because of the demand in manufacturing for dependable workers they no longer ask but if they do then be honest. I hope and pray everything works out for each of you because everyone deserves a second and sometimes third chance.
Absolutely it’s discrimination!! I cry everyday, I live in Ohio I lost my RN license in 2012 for writing a script for pain pills and getting it filled at the pharmacy, 10 20mg Opana’s I knew I would get caught but my addiction took over and I guess at that point 10 measly pills were enough to lose everything. I was charged with Deception to obtain a dangerous substance 4th degree felony. No jail time first time ever in trouble 2 years probation, and have had 1 job at an envelope factory which I don’t think did a background check because I lied and said no to the felony question and I was never fired. I quit because I had a high risk pregnancy and I had been there a year but I haven’t been able to find a job since. Wal mart hired me and I told them about my felony and they said it was just fine just to be honost when going through the background check, I was called and told my job offer was rescinded because the were put on a hiring freeze. It’s a joke. I have a Bachelor’s degree and cannot work all and btw I live in public housing with my felony and I have several very good friends on Section 8 that absolutely had felonies spent years in jail and are still on parole so the person above who said you cant I’m living proof that you can and ALOT of people do.
You can also contact your local EDD office and see if you qualify to be bonded.
Thank you Brian! @ Ford Aerospace
I was convicted of a felony possession for being on scene of nod- my college degree and my grad hours went out the window i have to nwaitress and some places will not hire because of my felony. I stayed to help my friend when i should have run I lost my car my old man has a violent felonym and cant get alongn to work for more than a month – thanks witch hunt of a country
Kroger just hire me last month, until today they let me go SMH..can I fight this in the union
goodwill is on this list and i know thats just not true… even thought they will allow an offender to complete community service there, they will not hire with misdemeanors, much less felonies.. i have both.. was hired there before my felony.. worked for three weeks and was terminated because corporate didnt want criminals as their representatives.. laughable… so yeah someone needs to verify this list cause i think most of it is bogus.
goodwill do hire felons, that was my first job when i was released. they just do drug test
It must be for a different state. I live in Minnesota and have a 5th degree controlled substance drug felony for 1 controlled pill that wasn’t my prescription found in my vehicle when I was pulled over for a DWI for drinking in 2011. It’s a pain in the ass trying to get any kind of employment. I’ve been turned down by Walgreens, Kmart, Home Depot, Family Dollar, Ace Hardware and All State Insurance Company and they all said it was all because of my felony that disqualified me. I have over 10 years of customer service experience, clerk experience and am knowledgeable with computers. So that is a straight up bullshit list.
Its been 11 years since I was convicted of my felony.I kept a rental car to long and had the money to pay for it. because its a felony of grand auto theft. I cant get no job. after 11 years. I thought companies can only go back 7 years. I waited in faith and hope flipping and making burgers, just be disappointed after 11 years
