List Of Jobs That Hire Felons In 2024
Many people with a criminal record come to us and ask “Are there any good jobs for felons?”
The short and reassuring answer is – Yes, of course there are companies that hire felons! The long answer is that you need to know what type of work you have the best chances of getting, because MANY jobs are not open to ex cons.
When you are out looking for work, your first instinct may be to apply for a job at a local big box store, such as Walmart, Costco (which has a $14/hr starting pay), Home Depot, etc. or a fast food chain restaurant, such as McDonald’s or KFC, etc.
You may be disappointed and shocked when all of these places turn you down. The reason is simple: these are big corporations and their hiring policies is not felon-friendly. They have hundreds of other applicants to choose from who don’t have a criminal past.
What Are The Best Jobs For felons?
Now you may wonder – are there jobs where I have a stronger chance of being hired with a felony?
Indeed, there are! Any job where you don’t have direct contact with customers is a better fit for a felon. The good news is that these jobs often pay better ($12-30 per hour) and usually require some technical skills and/or knowledge.
For example, many factories like to employ ex-cons, because these companies take advantage of the federal tax breaks they receive from hiring a felon.
Don’t worry, your opportunities are not limited to factories alone. Other positions such as a truck driver, electrician/plumber apprentice, building/roofing contractor, taxi driver, food or package delivery, construction and trade jobs, data support/analyst, etc may be available, if you have the right skills and are willing to learn.
Moreover, if you get higher education you will be more likely to land a job despite your felonies. Mostly because those with an education have a broader range of skills and past professional experience.
If you don’t have an education, we strongly recommend taking classes at a local technical college or trade school.
Many offenders that we know are taking engineering classes. Within a year they are working in a factory making around $15-17 an hour. We have seen this time and time again.
Coding, computer programming, accounting and graphic design skills are also in high demand in the current work market place.
Here is a list of additional employment opportunities to consider
- Freelance Jobs for Felons
- Roofing Jobs for Felons
- Temp Agency Jobs for Felons
- Medical Jobs for Felons
When you look for jobs, try to apply to places that may skip the background check or will do a very limited one.
As you may have already discovered, failing the criminal background check is the SINGLE factor that prevents most felons from finding decent paying employment, or any job at all for that matter!
Small businesses that employ felons
It may come as a surprise, but many small owner operated business are often willing to give felons another chance. Of course, this depends on what your past crime is, the circumstances around it, as well as your overall knowledge and skills.
As you will see from the list, these business are usually professional trade or construction companies, that are always looking for new workers. The owner wants to see someone honest, very hard working, punctual, and eager to learn new skills.
If you are willing to get on the job training, eventually you can get a much better paying job at this or a different (larger) company as a foreman or project manager ($30+ per hour).

* Getting a job at Lyft / Uber is a hit or miss for most felons. While basic requirements for employment state that non-violent criminal record older than (5-7) years is ok, many of our readers report that they have to jump through additional hoops, once their background check comes in.
Also, even if you get accepted to drive for a Ride Sharing service, you need a fairly recent vehicle.
Oil companies hiring felons
If none of the local companies want to hire you because of your felony conviction, consider going to work for an oil company. They are more open to hiring felons and the pay is very high ($30 per hour+) because these are very challenging jobs and very few people want them.
Many companies, such as ExxonMobile, also offer apprenticeships and on the job training to attract candidates that are interested in these jobs.
Jobs in the oil/fracking industry include:
Fracking equipment operator
Oil field operator
Derrick hand
Floorhand/leasehand/roustabout
Mechanical assembler
Hot oil operator
Tank driver
Truck driver
Water transfer operator
The oil industry is booming in the US and its continuously creating new jobs to keep up with the growing demand for oil.
This is good news for felons looking for work, because they have a much higher chance of getting hired in the oil sector, compared to other industries.
List of oil companies that accept employees with felony convictions
The following fracking oil companies are hiring felons to fill many on the positions that are currently in extremely high demand in the fracking industry.
ExxonMobile
Chevron
Halliburton
Conoco Phillips
ATI
Eastern Propane
ENSERVCO
Bosque Systems
Honstein Oil and Distributing
Arnold Oil Company Fuels
Most of the oil jobs are located in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, California, Utah, Colorado, North Dakota, Wyoming, New Mexico and Alaska.
Passing The Background Check For Employment
What you need to understand is that most entry-level, minimum wage positions (under $11-12 per hour) in big corporations are much harder for felons to get than similar jobs in a smaller company.
This is because in most of these jobs, be it retail or food service, you will need to have direct contact with customers. Employers get very nervous about this and don’t want to run the risk of exposing their clients to a felon.
Another reason of course is the background check. Even if you do well on the interview, the corporate background check is very extensive, and the policy is usually to turn down everyone who fails the background check.
Even if its been 10 years or more since your conviction, many of these jobs will turn you down, even though on their applications they state that they are an equal opportunity employer. This is because many states report criminal charges that over 10 years old and these still show up on the background check.
Having said this, you should still APPLY to all local open positions in the area, where you would be qualified to work. The more you apply, the higher your chances that someone will hire you, despite the felony charges.
In many instances, if you have a marketable skill (such as computer related, or construction), it will often be easier to do freelance work online, or start your own business. In this case, you can avoid the background check all together.
Improving Credit Can Help A felon Get A Better Job
A little known secret is that many companies like to run a credit check on a potential applicant to see if they have good credit. This indicator helps hiring managers determine how trustworthy someone is.
Of course, many felons struggle with really poor credit and have credit scores that are bellow 300!!!! This fact in addition to the background check really lowers a felon’s chances of getting a job.
However, while there is very little most ex cons can do about their background check, there is A LOT to be done about repairing your poor credit. Yes its very hard and takes mindful spending, time and effort. However, many people have bounced back from really bad credit and even bankruptcy, so you can do it if you put your mind to it.
If you are determined to fix your credit, read our step by step guide on how to get from a low to an excellent credit score.
Best of luck in your job search. Let us know your experience with any of the above companies, or a company that we should add to this list.
If this article has helped you out in anyway please share it on your social media or email it to other felons that you may know. Together we can find good work and get a fresh start in our lives!
Can people with 2 or more felonies get hired by someone?
I have a job interview at Kohl’s in a couple of days. Back in early 2014 I was charged with a DUI misdemeanor for driving drunk. I hope that doesn’t deter me from acquiring the position.
No one on here is talking about registered felons…Are there ANY companies that will hire a registered felon…??
I have 4 college degrees and can’t land steady work…I’ll work 90 days….start the hiring process for full time and nothing…my charge is from 06…still nothing…somebodies got to help…!!!
Not sure what state you are in but Diamond manufacturing of bluffton ohio hire all types of felons even s*x offenders
I see no hope for any of us. I just need life to move on. Yep, mistake did it, did time…screwed for life. What more can one give?….I guess this is why we were fed the shitty food while incarcerated because life is shit sandwiches at this point.
Just got out of prison after 2+ years and I’m running into the same brick wall everyone else is. I’m eager to get to work and have put in more than 25 applications. Have been hired a few places like Target only to reach the third party background check and have the offer of employment rescinded. 2 counts of assault on a public servant and attempting to take a weapon from a police officer. If I didn’t have the network of support I presently do I’d be going batshit crazy. All I know to do at this point is keep filing apps, networking, making good life choices, and continue to reach out to people in the hope that an opportunity comes my way.
Hey i have a felony my felony is over 16 years old i plead gulity to manufacturing and deliver of cannabis i have to do 24 months of probation and pay fees this is my first offense my first case my first everything i have not been in trouble since than but yet i see myself still without a job I’ve been online putting in all types of application I’m starting to lose all hope i don’t know what to do i have seven kids and I’m on section 8 and i can barely pay my rent after i finished up my probation it say that i have a conditional discharge but employer still don’t look at that i need some help bad can anyone out here give my some advice and tell me where to go from here thank u in advance
You’re not telling the truth. You wouldn’t be eligible for Section 8 with a felony drug conviction. You wouldn’t be eligible for any type of government housing with that conviction.
U can get help on government assistance with a felon it has to b between 8-10yrs old to qualify or u can’t have it as a charge from the assistance program that your on.
My friend had a felony on her background checks from 8 years previous. She got in touch with a social worker who gave her the necessary connections and got it expunged. She now has a job in a school and was able to save and buy a car…she’s doing much better.
No judgement please!
My fiancé was recently placed on the s*x offenders registry (yes I am aware of the charges and we were engaged before all this happened)
My question is that can this list be applied to s*x offenders as well?
I know in Minnesota they have temp agencies that can find s*x offenders after incarceration find jobs. I worked previously at an assembly factory (I’m not a s*x offender but I do have a felony) and a lot of the new hires through the temp agency were s*x offenders returning to work. Temp agencies at least in Minnesota, get tax deductions for finding them jobs as long as it isn’t a job around children or working with customer service with the public. If you have any Temp Agencies where you live you should contact them and see what their guidelines are.
some yes and some no many places will not mess with a s.o. even mcdonalds are no longer hiring us. but best plan is apply everywhere use indeed.com for updated openings craigslist is ok but not great. he will find something it wont be easy but will happen. best scenario is ask for the chance to explain to a manager or h.r. what happened and that you guys are working to get past it. proof of therapy and a consistent work history are your best assets as well as pointing out his family and/or community support him.
Two years ago, while suffering from severe depression and anxiety, I set a fire in my home. I immediately called 911 and I told them what had happened. I was not arrested, there were no injuries and no insurance fraud involved. A month later I got a subpoena stating I was being charged with aggravated arson. Last year, I pleaded guilty to arson 4. I was given community service, probation and ordered to pay court costs and seek counseling. That is the only thing in my 49 years that is on my record. I don’t even have a speeding ticket and have never spent one minute in jail, yet I can’t even find a job scooping dog poop. I’m at my wits end and so afraid that I will slip back into the depression and anxiety that got me in the shape I’m in now. I have an engineering degree, steady work history and great references, but still can’t get people to see past that one stupid mistake I made. On top of that, I have two children depending on me, and this is all stressing me out. I have no job, no money and I can’t even get into subsidized housing because of this.
NOT TRUE I WAS CONVICTED OF A FELONY FIVE YEARS AGO NOT A VIOLANT ONE IVE BEEN WORKING FOR GENERAL MILLS WHICH IS FELON FRIENDLY TILL RECENT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A JOB EVEN TAKING PAY CUTS AS AN EXPERIANCE CLAMP DRIVER NO ONE WILL HIRE ME I MAKE IT THROUGH THE INTERVIEWS AND DRUG SCREENS AND WHEN MY BACKGROUND COME BACK I GET DENIED I RECENTLY APPLIED TO KMART AND PEPSI DR PEPPER AND A WHOLE LONG LIST OF TEMP AGENCYS MADE IT THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS AND THEN WAM GET SHUT DOWN DUE TO MY MORE THEN 5 YEAR OLD LAST CONVICTION AND MAN I AM FUSTRATED I AM RUNNING OUT OF OPTIONS TO FEED MY FAMILY ITS INSANE HOW THESE COMPANY TELL YOU THEY ARE FELON FRIENDLY AND REALLY ARENT NO WONDER PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN IN THE SYSTEM KEEP GOING BACK WHEN MAKING A LIVING IS MADE SO DIFFICULT FOR US THE ONES THAT DO TRY I MEAN
I live in Michigan. I was about to go back to school for early childhood education. I honestly blocked that portion of my life out and don’t remember the date of conviction. However, I do remember those federal agents and cuffs in 2001. My goal is to open my own daycare. Is this a waste of time? I didn’t think it was in Michigan.
I am a Registered Nurse in TX, facing 2 counts of Possession of CS w/ Intent to distribute for Meth. Mine isn’t a long story, it is what it is. I will be losing my nursing license. It is a horrible situation I allowed myself to get in to. Let my family down and have literally lost everything……..house, vehicle and marriage (my husband was incarcerated while I was doing my thing, he didn’t have a clue). It’s been 35 weeks since my arrest, I’ve taken 33 drug tests and have been clean the last 30 of them. Although I am incredibly thankful I am free, it is frustrating that I can not find a job. I’ve given up on anything involving nursing……because in TX there is actually oversight by state agencies regarding hiring felons in particular settings such as working with children and the elderly. Sooooooo now I’m looking at things like retail and call centers. Prayers to everyone, I know it is hard, but my faith tells me things will work out for the better.
I was convicted of a state jail felony 7 years ago(possession on a controlled substance-2 hydocodone pills). Can I get a job as a postal worker in Texas where I reside?
I am a professional. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and have worked in the field for 20+ years. Unfortunately, my line of work left me with a serious back injury from lifting morbidly obese patients. No fault of mine as I did use proper techniques, however, it is inevitable when doing wound care and bathing due to the positioning required to achieve the task at hand. Having been an addict in the past, before acquiring an education, I ALWAYS let my doctors know I am in recovery. Despite this, my doctor prescribed me Percocet 10s three times daily as needed. I quickly became addicted. This resulted in my stealing meds from work and buying on the street to feed my addiction. I subsequently received a felony for theft (long story). Was only given probation, but lost my license and have been unable to obtain gainful employment. Problem is not only my felony but also long periods of unemployment between jobs as well as too many jobs in my history in a short period of time. Have been working with the Workforce in my community as well as many other agencies. Temp agency also. Finally landed a job couple weeks ago only to be escorted out on the forth day of employment due to felony showing up on my background check. I had already listed it for the temp agency on my application with an explanation. They refused to give me a copy of my app when I requested it. I am SEVERELY depressed and hopeless. I AM clean and sober now and have been. Cant get off probation until I pay off my restitution of approx. $3,000.00. So just got an additional 6 months. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!
Thanks for advice in advance!
Same thing happened to me I’m in sales I’m felon and I make great $ u just have to sell urself get rid of the felon complex and reach for the sky
I am a felon and its 7 years old now, I recently got a degree in Industrial Maintenance Technology and got a Job at Axel Americas, I make 22.50 an hour, I was honest up front about it, more employers care more about your work ethic and integrity than your past, so keep looking, just be honest and let Jesus carry you the rest of the way. JESUS DOES NOT CARE IF YOUR A FELON, IF YOU SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD, ALL THESE THINGS SHALL BE ADDED UNTO YOU
I could not agree with you more Danny. No matter what a background check saysGod has the final say so. Be encourage people
So Jesus is going to pay their rent?
I wish Jesus paid mine.
Amen! God has the final say, if you trust in The Lord He can do ALL things, have faith & don’t give up!
YES! ALL things are possible with GOD!
Jesus doesn’t care, he received the death sentence and never did anything wrong. Some of us need the school of hard knocks to change, but people do and can change. The key is keep getting back up and trade school doesn’t hurt.
I have a felony that is 8 years old and I have had 10 job offers in 6 months and every offer has been rescinded due to my background, and that because here in Pennsylvania employers can run 10 year background check which is the norm here. I don’t know what to do
Self employment. As hard as it may seem, you can be whatever you set your mind to be. I became a felon. Lmfao
Ricky LOLOLOL!!!!!
Roflmao. Me to!!
I have been out of work since June 2015 and unable to get a job because I am on deferred felony probation. It isnt even a conviction, and I have 15 years in sales, 10 of it was working in financial industry aka BANKS and yet nobody will give me a chance. I am at the end of my rope and feel like giving up. What can I do? It should be the job of my probation officer to help me find employment but he refuses to help and just keeps saying “things will get better”. No, they won’t. I only have 5 months left of a 5 year probation and after all I’ve been through, NOW I’m about to lose my car and my apartment all because people are so closed minded. It’s discouraging. I feel for any of you out there who are going through the same thing.
My son is on a defferred plea. What does that really mean? Do you still have a record after the probation is over and you have completed it. He too is having a hard time finding a job. For a possession of stolen property felon charge he got for pawning something in his name he didn’t know was stolen smh
Telemarketing jobs honestly. It drains you mentally but some pay really well.
My son to is going through the same thing we have lost all hope can’t find work any where if he can’t pay his restitution before his last hearing they will send him to jail please help
Kroger does not hire felons. They will hire you initially, but they will terminate you after your background check is complete with GSI …. approx. 2-3 weeks. They are not felon friendly. You might be able to pass the background check if your court documents have not been filed yet, but other than that they will terminate you within a couple of weeks of hiring you if your background check does not come up okay according to them.
they discriminate but not only felonies!!! I have a very minor misdemeanor (non person) non theft, and they disqualified me as well. Mine is 2 years old.
They offered me a job and I did the background check and drug test and start orientation immediately. So most likely they’re going to rescind their offer because I have a person to person misdeamonor huh?!!
My daughter just got terminated from Kroger after two weeks employment because of a treatment in leu of felony conviction for drug possession that is a year old. She was honest on her job application about her drug charges, and her boss was happy with her performance, yet said corporate policy was to rescind job offer.
I understand, I’m 2 months out from receiving my Master’s in Public Admin., I hold a BSW and a A.A.S. from Rutgers and ECC. However, because of my felony that’s years old, no one still won’t hire me. Can someone please help me?
Ophelia,
which City and State do you reside in?
“Dog pop scooping” You proud of that one, webmaster?
Dog walking would be a more insightful replacement. Cash business, self-employed, good for networking…
It’s a job. With pay. Better than not getting paid for it. No one is too good for any job. Everyone starts from the bottom.
No one is going to give u the keys to their house also it may be a restriction, depending on the felony.
Even the poop scoop people wont hire felons. Non s*xual im sure if uts s*xual you can hang yourself. As a felon to tho its about hang yourself
The law was pass that there will be a non discrimination applied to all jobs and careers but yet it is another one of the biggest lies in the employment field. I am a felon do to me having a theft charge in 2013 it comes up immediately after the background check and I have applied for a county job at the hospital went through the hiring process got hired and than for their HR department to rescind my offer I have been so upset no way to turn and being a single mother without a second chance at life is suicidal
Crying out loud for someone’s help
Please…for your kids sake seek assistance with this. Im sure there are companies out there that will hire you. If it’s not the job you want….still stick with it and try to find assistance to help you if oit does not pay much. As big as our country is I’m lure there is aid. Think labour making yourself better and stronger. ..Pls do not throw in the towel. Good luck and prayers to you
your so true, I was found guilty before, my case went to court. Even though it said pending charges it show up, I was offered 5 position, but have the background check and the pending charges each one of them as rescind their offer to me. My charges has nothing to do with my professional life only my personal and I am in the process of make sure this person never comes into my life again, I feel you when you say without a second chance at life is suicidal, each day I just trying to encourage myself by saying I know someone will hire me for a great job.
Never give up Aliiy! I’m having to tell myself daily not to give up and it’s hard, but I know God will get us all through this process.
I know it’s hard but stay strong for yourself and your babies! You are not alone although you may feel like it! I’m in this with you and God is with us all so we can and will not lose.
Thanks for being an encourager! The world needs more like you.
I agree about the biggest lies in the employment field regarding non discrimination. So true! Many of the companies listed that hire felons do NOT hire felons at all. It is very hard to find a job, my felony was in 2010 and I haven’t so much as gotten a speeding ticket since! Learned and now I am still paying the price for it. I understand what you are going through. I am a single mother also.
Im going through same thing being single dad with 3 kids one with medical condition. I feel same as you. Im not happy at all about your situation but now i know im not the only one dealing with this situation and feeling same as you.
Don’t give up! As lo g as you’re alive things can improve and you will succeed with perseverance and prayer
I can help you get a job call me 2107629196.
It is a call center job.
Ann what State are u in…….I need help finding a job as a felon. I am in school almost done with my bachelors degree too.
Do you still have info on the job offer
I am an ex felon and ive been working since i got out of prison in 2000. Ive been in housekeeping since. I started as a regulr employee and worked my way up to being a supervizsor. The pay is ok but i know im worrth more than what my company pays me. I work hard and i enjoy hands on as a team player. Im looking for a better opportunity be cause i like any other citizen wants a better life. Im proud of who i am today .
Kmart told me that their policy prevents them from hiring felons!
I had an interview with Kmart and they knew about my background offered me the job and told me not to worry about background check, well I never heard back from them.
If you are a professional with a felony there is almost NO employers that will hire you unless the conviction is older than 7 years. You have to be able to pass a background check & most go back 7 years. I know that Home Depot will not hire people with all felonies. My husband was offered a job there but then had it rescinded because of his felony background. This was for a professional white collar job. His felony is only a year old so it shows up on his background check. If you have a skill or manual labor then it might be easier to find someone willing to look at you as a person. Big companies with large HR departments just discard people with less than squeaky clean backgrounds. It isn’t illegal unless you’re a protected class. I have been told that Starbucks & Publix grocery stores hire felons.
Starbucks doesn’t hurt them all . !
I have a grade 2 wastewater liscence and have been hired and then revoked 2 jobs cintas and bluediamond.I’m not on probation or parole
I was hired at home depot and only been out of prison for four days. Five felony charges. I guess its a case by case basis. No one will touch a felon that was convicted of s*x crime or crime against a child.
Not only piece of shit crimes (s*x crimes) but if you have any violence alot of jobs will not hire u especially if weapons involved
Public doesn’t. I’ve tried and my felon is 7 years old
Publix I meant. Auto correct sucks
I have a felony that is 32 years old. Cannot get an expungement or pardon. Every company I have applied for I get rejected. NO company wants their reputation and image tarnished over hiring a felon. The system wants you homeless, broke, starve and live with your parents. I have for 32 years. I am a very old felon and still the system won’t change. My felony was non violent and not involving children. Best of luck to you. Take care.
Wow this is the most informative information out there. Honestly I had no idea what a felon like myself was going to do. I think that since there are so many jobs that hire felons, I should be able to find employment.
I really like the thought of these small businesses that can hire me. Thanks for the awesome post.
I hate to be the one who thinks that you are not telling the true, but that is what I’m thinking. You are rule out before you can show what you can do. I can not drive a truck, or cook, so their is not much left for me.
One thing that could possibly help felons to get jobs is to learn how to spell and to use proper grammar. Spelling and grammar errors on applications will make some totally ignore your otherwise great skills. I’ve seen this happen.
Completely agree 🙂 And not only felons … many people can’t or don’t spell correctly, why there are so many Grammar Nazis out there … it’s hard to succeed without proper English skills
I definitely agree with you. There’s many more than just felons who don’t spell correctly or use correct grammar.
Even with all that and experience it doesn’t help.
Its hard to say everyone on that list does not hire felons that whole list is false for co.springs at least landscapers constructions trade jobs none of them hire felons
I’m a cAss A CDL driver with a felony
Can you give us more information about your success?
What otr companies hire felons do you know?
So where did you go to get your cdl
