Do Walmart Hire Felons In 2024?
Walmart hires felons! Therefore, if you have a felony and are looking for a job, consider applying to Walmart.
Workers are always in demand here. After all, Walmart is the world’s biggest private employer! Moreover, Walmart is well known as one of the top companies that hires people with felony convictions.
In fact, their corporate policy makes it a point to state that they is an equal opportunity employer.
Now is a perfect opportunity to get hired at Walmart, so don’t miss your chance! During the holiday season, Walmart stores across the US get extremely busy and they are looking to fill many positions.
Because of the holiday rush, many managers will be more open to hiring convicted felons, if they have the right skills and are willing to work hard.
Still, to have a shot at getting a job, you must be prepared to pass Walmart’s criminal background check and a drug test.
How to get an entry level job at Walmart
Get started and look for Walmart jobs near you in Google search, as well as apply online at https://careers.walmart.com/. Moreover, websites like indeed.com, glassdoor.com and monster.com will regularly post new jobs from Walmart, and you can search these sites based on your zip code.
You can also walk into your local Walmart store and fill out an application on the spot.
If you are a convicted felon, you will have a few entry level job options that Walmart can potentially hire you to do. These include:
– Stock room clerk
– Distribution center clerk
– Cashier clerk
– Cart attendant
– Janitor/cleaner
– Sales associate
– Fresh food associate
– Overnight stocker
– Freight handler
– Power equipment operator
– Delivery Driver
As you can see many of these positions will require special skills and training. You must also be ready to lift and move heavy boxes. In general, most positions will require manual labor and strength.
To get some hard core data, we have sent a couple of felons undercover to try to get hired at a local Walmart in the state of Massachusetts. Both individuals were offered cashier positions, on the condition that they would pass a drug test.
Since both applicants were on probation and successfully passed all their drugs tests previously, they also passed the ones Walmart gave them.
However, after a week or so both people received a letter in the mail from the company, stating that they were denied employment.
Stated reason: failure to pass the criminal background check.
Walmart Background Check FAQ’s
Its Walmart’s corporate policy to conduct a background check for all of its potential employees, including those applying for part time positions.
Q: What is the background check used for?
A: The company uses the information it will gather through the background check to assesses the candidate’s past problems with the law, and the nature of the offenses.
However, based on this information, the hiring managers will also make a judgement regarding a candidate’s moral values, ability to be honest, to work hard, to communicate in appropriate ways with customers, to stay out of trouble, to make sound decisions, and follow the rules.
Q: What will the check show about my past?
A: It will reveal all your convictions and none-convictions. It will also include cases that have been dismissed and were not prosecuted. It will have items such as your: financials (credit score, credit card debts, loan defaults, etc), driving record, and education history.
If you have your record expunged, Walmart will not have access to your past criminal history.
Q: How long does it take?
A: A standard background check can take anywhere from 3 days to 1 week. An FBI background check takes up to 30 days, but Walmart does not usually do those. Thus, it can take as long as 1-2 weeks for the hiring manager to get back to you.
Q: How far back can the background check go?
A: In most states, companies are allowed to request a 7 year criminal history. However there are states that allow a prospective employer to look as far back as 10 years.
While this is very daunting, you still have to apply for jobs, and hope that the hiring manager will recognize your skills and desire to work hard. Find out how far a background check goes in your location.
Q: Who runs the background check?
A: Currently, Walmart has partnered with backgroundchecks.com, which is a premier and comprehensive criminal record search and screening program for large employees.
They will access the following databases to get information on each applicant:
– US AliasVERIFY
– Name and address history report
– Nationwide sex offender search
– National security search
– County criminal search (includes all jurisdictions)
– Federal criminal search
Walmart DOES NOT use online instant background checks, because those databases are usually incomplete, and employers don’t like to rely on them.
What is the hiring process at Walmart like?
If you want to apply, here is how you do it.
Step 1: Fill out an online application. Today, Walmart does NOT accept paper applications. If you don’t have access to a computer or internet, you can go to a local store and fill out their online application at the help desk computer.
Step 2: After filling out all your basic information and which position/s you are interested in, you will need to go through an Assessment Test. There will be around 65 questions on different topics. The better you do on this test, the more chances you will have to get called back for the interview.
Step 3: If your application gets accepted, you will be asked to come in for an interview. You may have more than one person interviewing you at the same time. At most stores, there will be 3 managers talking to you. This may be stressful, so its important to prepare yourself, and maybe run a mock interview with a few friends or family members.
During this time, the hiring manger will start asking questions about your background. This is the moment when you have to be 100% honest about your criminal record.
If you lie or even slightly change what happened, they will find out the truth after doing a thorough criminal background check. So lying ultimately ruins your chances of getting this job!
Step 4: Depending on the store and position, you may be called for a second interview.
Step 5: If you pass all the interviews, the company will conduct the criminal background check and a drug test. Its very important to stay drug free, because Walmart reserves the right to repeat the drug test at any point during the hiring process and even after. This means that they can take away your offer of employment, or your current job, if you fail the drug test.
Step 6: You may need to wait 1 to 2 weeks to find out your answer. If you don’t hear from them yourself, you should call.
Step 7: If you get hired, there will be a three day orientation for new employees, where you will learn all of your duties as well as Walmart’s general policies and procedures that all employees must follow.
Tip: Walmart Drug Test Policy 2017 and on: based on information from previous employees, it seems that many store locations have stopped asking entry level employees to submit a drug test. Its currently only reserved for managerial position.
However, some locations continue to administer the drug test as part of the standard application process to all employees, as of January 2019. Typically, its a urine test, but sometimes it can also be a swab.
How much is starting pay at Walmart?
According to Glassdoor, cashiers at Walmart earn $9-10 per hour. This is around $18,000-20,000 per year.
In 2015, Walmart raised its minimum pay for most workers to $10 per hour. Many earn an average salary of about $13 per hour, which is equivalent to $26,000 per year.
Part time workers earn an average of $10 per hour, which is more than the current federal requirement for minimum wage.
You salary will depend on the store location (stores in some cities and counties pay more than others), as well as years of relevant experience.
When do you get paid?
In consideration of its employees’ varied needs, Walmart has set up a system called “Instapay” where a worker can withdraw half of her wages before the pay day. This is an app that allows you to transfer money from your earnings directly into your checking account, prepaid account, or Walmart Associate Paycard.
There are also financial planning tools within the app that can help you pay bills on time, set financial goals, and start to pay off debts. It costs $3 per pay period to use the app.
Workers get the rest of the salary on a biweekly bases, which is standard policy for most employers in US.
Should you bother applying if you have a felony?
Yes!!! You should always apply to any local position available, because you don’t know where luck will catch up with you.
Here is the real deal with Walmart:
– Walmart like many other retailers (eg Target, K-Mart/Sears) will NOT hire a felon who is a sex-offender, or has a conviction for violent crimes or theft.
Individuals who have committed theft, burglary or violent crimes will most likely not be offered employment at Walmart.
So if this applies to you, see what other jobs you may be eligible for here.
– Most locations will only consider you if your felony happened at least 7 years ago. However, unfortunately, many places deny felons even if the crime was committed 12-18 years ago. So don’t be surprised if you get denied.
– You will only quality for an entry level sales or night stocker position. No management jobs for felons.
– From speaking to hundreds of people across the country who are in the same situation, it looks like location plays a huge factor. In some cities and states, Walmart stores are more willing to give felons a shot at employment, while in other places, historically they always say “no”.
In fact, there have been many cases where a felon was able to get a job at Walmart in one state, but was denied after moving to another state. This means that you have to apply and see what happens with your local store.
– You must be HONEST about your record when filling out the application. If you lie, and they discover the felony on their own (they always do) you will be FOREVER barred from applying to any Walmart, Sam’s Club, Wayfair, and any other company that Walmart Inc. owns.
– The hiring manager makes the final decision after interviewing you. If you make a good connection and are able to show that you are an honest hard working person, who just needs a chance, there is a strong possibility that you will get the job.
– The company evaluates each applicant on an individual bases, and also considers the circumstances surrounding the committed crime.
– Your chances of getting a job will be higher if you have relevant skills and experience.
– If you have a money or theft related conviction, you should not bother applying.
Tips for landing the job
Here is what you can do to put your best foot forward during the hiring process and increase your chances of being hired.
1. Indicate on your application and during the interview that you are available to work during any day of the week and any hours of the day. Many Walmart stores require night shift workers, and felons often get specifically these jobs.
2. Be open to any type of a position, and say so on the application and during the interview.
3. Look neat and professional when you come in for the interview
4. Be 100% honest. Share the details surrounding your crime but also stress how you have reformed since then.
5. Talk about relevant skills, and character traits that would make you an outstanding Walmart employee.

Here is comment from Virginia (was posted via contact form instead of comments)
I would just like to say when I got out January 8,2015 I had a interview at Wal-Mart and I spoke with two different managers for part of the hiring process and the second one told me that I did a great interview and he wished he could hire me but due to my felony he wasn’t allowed to hire me. I served 8.5 years flat for trafficking of a dangerous drug and dui.
He said he knew that I would make a wonderful addition to the company but Wal-Mart does not hire felons and the moment that they find out that someone slipped through the crack they were let go. So they do not hire exfelons period. So Wal-Mart needs to change there saying of equal opportunity.
I just had my second interview at Wal-Mart in WV they told me I have the job and told me my pay rate. I signed all the papers needed when leaving the lady told me she’d call me as soon as my background check came back which could take up totwo weeks. I have a conspiracy change as well as a forgery of a credit card charge. All felonies! I’m so worried because I quit my job at McDonald’s because Walmart called me and told me they wanted to offer me the job and that I was haored…. I was honest about my charges and they were because I was an active drug user at the time not just because I wanted a felony but now seeing all these comments I feel like I better keep looking for employment….
So what happened
I just applied for Walmart and have been offered a job. Now all that’s is pending is the background check. I have two felony convictions for stealing cars. I am curious to find out weather or not they will proceed with the hiring process. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.
I’m very disappointed, I thought I had the job, I was convicted of forgery, bullshit charge , I sign my own check but it was a 2 party insurance check. I only sign my signature and it wasn’t my fault. The store cashed it , they would let me explained , I thought I had the job.. They gave me my pay and everything. This wrong , everybody deserve a second chance.
I experienced the same fate at Wal-Mart in Abbeville,LA. My conviction was in 1992; for drug distribution and possession. Served and finished my sentence in 1998 and parole in 2007. I had an interview…but have yet to get a call…
Walmart goes back 10 years on there background checks. I’ve applied 2 times and got shot down both times,1 time 2 years after my felony and this year makes 7 years I’ve been convicted. my mother’s been there for 9 years going on 10 but it don’t make any difference if your family works at the same store or not.
I applied with Walmart while I was on pretrial for my conspiracy felony. I was offered a job did my drug test and then they ran my background. I of course had already disclosed my arrest. I had not been tried of found guilty at that point figured everything would be fine. well it wasn’t background came back with some 15 year old misdemeanor check that I wasn’t even aware that it existed or was deliquent. Then I returned back after actually serving time and had all my ducks in a row with what was on my background and had taken care of the previous from 5 yrs prior before my conviction and they gave me that speel on waiting on the background company to recommend..they said no but Walmart human resources has the discretion to hire you should they so choose regardless of the background company. So for anyone that asks..are they Felon friendly…depends on whose JUDGING..OOPS Who’s interviewing you. They don’t tell you why …the why is that they have felon-phobia. Their loss.
First of all people make mistakes ,I for one made them over and over do to my environment and not having my parents to teach me that what I was doing was wrong. It took a strong women to help me change mylife around and help me realize that I was better then that and that I can accomplish anything goal that I set.i been applying for jobs for many years now to no avail, how do they expect people to change when they won’t give them a chance, it makes you want to give up and say (f:::::k it) I guess the government wants you to stay a criminal because they make money off you when you go to jail and or on probation so they do t care!!!
My sister has been working as an overnight stocker in Austin, Tx in Walmart and she had a 5 yr old warrant (using phone in school zone) and a 20-year old misdemeanor (minor theft when she was 18). So yes, they hired her but then she was promoted to Asset Protection after doing so well and impressing her boss. They ran a more extensive background check and now want to fire her not for the 5-yr old warrant but for the 20-yr old misdemeanor. She even disclosed this to them ahead of time. She was 18-yrs old and stupid and now almost 40 and a great mother of 4. This was the first job she was really proud of too. She’s going to appeal it and ask her supervisor to back her up and also ask if they’ll take character references. Another friend of mine has a 35-year old felon (shot a guy’s car with a gun to scare him) and he too gets denied. He was denied by Home Depot. How is anyone ever supposed to change their lives for the better??
word
CAUSE ANY STATE CAN CHANGE UP ..in new Jersey its a &yr check so if your last criminal felony conviction is 7- 10 yrs old you dont have to check off the box saying you were charged cause they cant go back that far but MOST DO (ADP Background-Check witch might not pull up your felony if too old but wil for some reason show any pending arrests or Pending convictions you face while your applying and Going to Court i Know this Cause I apply evey year just to get on they nerve and they send me a copy every time and i always call to dispute why are they looking at my arrest record and asking me about tickets for traffic violations not just what i was criminaly convicted for years ago …
I wish I hadn’t marked the box now knowing it’s too old to matter unless I bring it to their attention. They punish you for being honest. What a message to send.
I was denied employment in Pueblo Colorado 1 month ago they pulled up a petty theft from 1984 I was denied employment on this I have nothing else on my record not even a traffic ticket
I just applied in PW Colorado at Walmart and got the same rigamaro. I’ve got a passing bad check charge from 10 and I have had my identity stolen. I will never find work. It’s like they don’t want us to be successful.
I was just hired and start orientation on the 12th. I have a Felony Aggravated Assault (Non Dangerous) from 2005. Also a Misdemeanor Theft Charge from 2000. I was honest on my application and thought for sure i wouldn’t get the job. The background check took nearly a month to clear. I applied for an overnight stocking job.
May I ask what state u are in
Pete, did you keep the job? My sister has been working as an overnight stocker in Austin, Tx and she had a 5 yr old warrant (using phone in school zone) and a 20-year old misdemeanor (minor theft when she was 18). So yes, they hired her but then promoted her to Asset Protection after doing so well. They ran a more extensive background and now want to fire her not for the 5-yr old warrant but for the 20-yr old misdemeanor. She’s going to appeal.
My charge was bogus. My wife bounced checks on a joint account and I was also charged with passingbad checks. Now I can’t earn money to save my my life. Now that my health doesn’t allow slave labor, they wouldn’t want my earning money in the same place I do all of my shopping at night anyway. God forbid they give me a chance to prove I’m really a good person. :/
That’s y
I’ve had the most terrible time at finding a job. My felony over 11 yrs old and I still can’t find a decent job. I committed a crime of theft. Since then I lost everything that important to me. Now it’s just time to say screw it. A felony will ruin your life. So that that are contemplating doing something stupid take this as a warning.
Seriously!
I need a job to support my kids i really need this job call me(281)662-0222
I was just denied employment at Walmart , after being told on the interview, that I was recommended for the job and would be contacted upon return of my background check that was admitted on the application, which was 9 years ago. This speaks the lanuage of double jorpardy, after serving time and case being closed.
What’s the charge bro
I have a domestic violence felony they did a background check I found nothing but since I just closed it now they won’t hire me they have no hardcore evidence anyone could have pencil that in it wasn’t on the online app I disclosed it on a piece of paper at the office I did disclose that felony but with no hardcore evidence and who knows where that paper went to how long is sat around how could they use that against me if there’s no evidence
I am going in today to do my drug testing and sign for my background check… I do have a felony & it’s 10 years old… Nothing violent nor theft… I just pray everything works out …
We shall see
Did you happen to get thevwslmsry job Nicole Nicole? I am going for an interview next week
Me too I also have one and I have an interview today. So let’s just see how it goes
Were you able to get the job?
This article is disbursing. Walmart has made millions , and yes off the backs of family members who loves ones are convicted felon
Two close family members of mine worked at Walmart with a felon. So I am surprised by this article. Maybe it depends on the Walmart.
What was the felony?
so true I agree that same exact thing happen to a young man I knew
It is the best time to make some plans for the future and
it’s time to be happy. I’ve learn this put up and if I may just I want to counsel you few fascinating things
or suggestions. Maybe you can write subsequent articles regarding this article.
I wish to read more issues approximately it!
It is a shame that they just lie when you put the application in they say no due to your police record. People dont get a chance and walmart need to stop lying. I definitely be glad when they are gone. Their family has made enough money especially off convicted felons and there families.
Yes I definitely agree I went through the same thing with Walmart passed two interviews went for the urine test and they told me they couldn’t hire me because of my background and all I have is a drug conviction very deceiving and depression just let me know from the door if I’m hired or not don’t play games with me making me feel like I have employment and I don’t
Yes I totally agree 110 percent
It is only a matter of time before most won’t be able to even get a job. The way the laws are written today, if you spit on the sidewalk anymore they want to charge you with a felony.
Learn a skilled trade!
Yes,that is 100 percent true. I was given the run around with Wal Mart until I realized they don’t actually hire felons. I passed THE drug screening and filled out the application with full honesty. Never got the job after jumping through all of their hoops. I think this is very wrong of them especially given the fact that I was informed that as soon as the urine analysis came back negative they would be calling me with my work schedule which we had already made. I am highly irritated and disgusted at this sickening game they play with felons. I feel that they should has a lawsuit filed against them for emotional damage in distress. It is not right to make somebody a hundred percent convinced that they have employment when they know that they definitely do not. Does anybody else agree?
I have recently experienced the exact same scenario at the new Amazon warehouse in Joliet, IL. I called the background check company and was told they would send a corrected report. I have a homicide (murder) I was told at the Amazon recruiting that my charge would not bar employment. This appears to not be the case.
I had the very same thing happen to me…
