SHU

It is not uncommon to hear that someone with a felony has come into a situation where they need assistance. It is often financial, and these individuals and their families are dependent on receiving this help.

Assistance can be found through programs that provide help with rent, free food, clothes, and financial assistance for paying utility bills. Programs are often offered through Churches.

Churches offer their assistance to low-income families in times of need. When many households are struggling to make ends meet, they should know that the Church can be a place to turn, regardless of your religion.

Why a Local Church Is the Right Place to Turn to For Rental Assistance

Most churches are funded by government subsidies. This ensures that the church is able to provide financial assistance, with vital things like paying your rent.

Churches may not be the first place you would think to look for rental assistance, but it could be the best option for you, and in many cases, the only option.

Churches are often the closest platform for people who are struggling with rent. Many churches give attention to home demands. If you are facing eviction, the local church may have the funds to contribute towards paying rent.

Churches that help with rent payments

Episcopal Church

The Episcopal Church focuses on helping those in need of urgent assistance. The church runs emergency home shelters, foodbanks, soup kitchens, and for those who have found themselves without a home after being evicted or the victim of a natural disaster, financial assistance. The financial assistance provided to fulfill their basic needs, like paying rent.

There are hundreds of locations of the Episcopal Church across the nation, making them the most accessible and popular amongst those seeking aid.

While the Episcopal Church offers financial aid, it does tend to be the least common service offered, but when available and if in need, rental assistance can be provided.

St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church

The church focuses on helping people who need emergency rent assistance. The families they provide financial support to are in critical condition with either sickness, addiction, familial problems, or other financial restraints/obstacles. This organization also provides mental health counseling.

When available, grants may be used to pay rent or utility bills when a facing disconnection of utilities or eviction. Financial assistance is limited, and priority goes towards those who are faced with an emergency.

The St. Vincent De Paul partnership of churches and its volunteers may be able to offer emergency assistance if needed.

United Methodist Church (UMC)

The United Methodist Church is a nationwide non-profit charity organization. They provide social services across the nation, and one of the many programs offered under the church’s organization is bill assistance. The United Methodist Church is faith based but they provide help or referrals to individuals and families of all religions.

The services are not offered directly by the United Methodist Church at the national level. These services are provided by the churches who partner with them. And these programs are referred to as “Ministries” at the local level.

While it is rare, some churches may provide cash assistance for rent, prescription medications, utility bills, or car repairs.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is the nation’s largest church group. They provide emergency financial support, as well as a good place to live.

The Salvation Army is dedicated to assisting the homeless and helpless populations of their communities with. You can apply for rent assistance or utility assistance if you are in need, but it is available only to those who have lost their homes and are left without a place to sleep.

These churches know that all people have the right to a life that is led with both respect and dignity.

How to ask for help paying rent from your local church

Many church ministries set aside a portion of their funds for acts of kindness, to provide food or financial aid to those in their community who need it. The church’s ability to give is not directly proportional to its size. Churches both large and small take part.

Each denomination of the church (Christian, Catholic, Protestant, etc.,) have their own procedures. But there is a basic process that you should be aware of in the case that you, or someone you know, needs help paying their rent.

Call the local church

Make an appointment with a benevolence minister or pastor. I know the word benevolence sounds like you are being sent to the Principals office, but what you are really doing is making a meeting with the one who handles-the-helping.

Be there and be there on time

You will not have to worry about showing up without an appointment because you followed step number one, of course. When you arrive at the agreed upon time, make sure you have your state issue ID, or other form of proper identification, ready.

Keep it cool

Breathe. Calmly and correctly fill out their questionnaire. You made it there in one piece and you are now meeting with the person that assists with providing help. All you have to do now is explain your needs.

Follow the requirements

The church may require you to attend classes like money management or financial coaching. Keep in mind, if you are married, your spouse may have to attend as well. If they do require classes, show up. Do not forget, they showed up for you first.

Take what you can get

Accept any work that the church offers you. Unless you are disabled, struggling, or a single parent, you should not turn down any opportunity that aids in your growth and stability.

Financial Assistance and Services Offered by Catholic Charities

The services provided by charities are extensive and most centers only have a limited amount of funding, but churches often can provide the financial assistance necessary for the survival of an individual and their family.

Before a church will offer any financial aid, they often need to make sure that those whom they lend to are able to pay it back once they are back on their feet. This emergency assistance for basic needs is short term, therefore, you will have to show your ability to be self-sufficient.

Financial Assistance and Services often offered through:

Food Assistance- Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens, and Free Food Banks. If you are struggling to put food on the table you should apply for SNAP benefits.

Utilities – Money is given to prevent the disconnection of the electricity or water due to unpaid bills or to ensure that you do not run out of heating fuel or oil.

Clothing – Clothing includes work uniforms as well as clothes for children who are attending school.

Prescriptions – only in select locations are churches able to pay for medications. This form of assistance is extremely limited, but if needed, it is more than work looking into.

Rental Assistance – Rental assistance helps you pay rent in the case of an emergency, like an immediate eviction, but some funds can be paid by you for security deposits. If you are struggling with paying rent, you should apply for federally funded Section 8 Housing.

Counseling – Counseling is FREE and is aimed to empower the individual. The counseling available includes Refugee Services, Immigration, Pregnancy, Adoption, and other social services.

Medical Needs – If you have medical needs, Catholic charities often have information on clinics. They can also provide you with an application to Christian Health Insurance Programs.

Debt Counseling From Churches

Debt management, spending habits, and creditworthiness are all personal finance issues that many people are facing today. This does not only have an effect on the individual, but also their families.

Free-faith and Christian based credit counseling agencies help families who need assistance, regardless of their religion.

Many of these programs are non-profit and help those low-income, working poor or struggling families to reset and refocus their financial path.

If you need debt counseling, Christian faith-based credit counseling agencies are available no matter what religion you practice.

In fact, these agencies function similarly to that of “non-religious” debt counseling group. The only difference is that religious groups provide mentoring and general advice in conjunction with debt assistance counseling.

It sounds way too good to be true, but everything is free and hopefully always, non-judgmental.

It’s also good to note that churches are able to assist with debt, as well as provide credit counseling, debt counseling, and loan program services.

The Catholic Charity programs available vary based on the location, the church, and the center.

It sounds limiting but with over three-thousand offices and agencies, Catholic churches are helping over fifteen million individuals each year.

Catholic charities are a great place to turn when in need of help.

If you find that you need help, look towards Catholic charities as a possible solution.

Even though the services are provided by the church, people of all backgrounds and religions can receive help if they need it. The Church and these programs know that this assistance is vital for many individuals and their families.

Support can be found in your local church if you need help, advice, counseling, referrals, and that short term financial assistance that you need.
