This can make it difficult on both ends of the hiring process, but it is particularly risky on the job seekers end. Determining which jobs are legitimate and which scams is not as easy as you would think.

We have to remember that scammers are people too. They have emotions and are usually quite good at what they do, considering scamming is their job. It is unlikely that each encounter will be the same BUT there are some tell-tale signs that a job is a scam.

If they ask for your personal information before you have a job offer, it’s time to start paying closer attention to the process you have found yourself in.

You may be excited that they are so interested in you right from the start, but even if they are very interested, they don’t need your personal information prior to offering the job. That is what calling references and google is for.

If you are asked to pay for anything upfront, that is a BIG red flag. No matter how badly you want this job. No matter how badly you may need this job.

If they are employing you and then telling you that there are expenses that you need to pay, I do not need to tell you it’s time to go – you should already be gone.

If you are asked for money or sensitive personal data to secure your job position, that makes no sense. Feel free to tell them that, too. Under no circumstances should you need to buy any software, electronics, or work-from-home-kits while searching for a work from home job. If you are in a situation where they offered you a lot of money for an extraordinarily little amount of work, maybe talking more about how easy the job is than the job itself.

All of these things may be true, too, but this is not a realistic situation, and you didn’t just get lucky here. If it feels like you can get rich quick, or even worse, they tell you that you can, odds are, it is almost certainly a scam.

You do not even need to provide references. Not all employers will check your references but if they do not ask for them, that’s a red flag.

No matter how good you are at what you do, your work experience should be verified or at least asked for. If you’re moving forward effortlessly, well, it may be time to consider that it may be too good to be true.
