List Of Jobs That Hire Felons In 2024
Many people with a criminal record come to us and ask “Are there any good jobs for felons?”
The short and reassuring answer is – Yes, of course there are companies that hire felons! The long answer is that you need to know what type of work you have the best chances of getting, because MANY jobs are not open to ex cons.
When you are out looking for work, your first instinct may be to apply for a job at a local big box store, such as Walmart, Costco (which has a $14/hr starting pay), Home Depot, etc. or a fast food chain restaurant, such as McDonald’s or KFC, etc.
You may be disappointed and shocked when all of these places turn you down. The reason is simple: these are big corporations and their hiring policies is not felon-friendly. They have hundreds of other applicants to choose from who don’t have a criminal past.
What Are The Best Jobs For felons?
Now you may wonder – are there jobs where I have a stronger chance of being hired with a felony?
Indeed, there are! Any job where you don’t have direct contact with customers is a better fit for a felon. The good news is that these jobs often pay better ($12-30 per hour) and usually require some technical skills and/or knowledge.
For example, many factories like to employ ex-cons, because these companies take advantage of the federal tax breaks they receive from hiring a felon.
Don’t worry, your opportunities are not limited to factories alone. Other positions such as a truck driver, electrician/plumber apprentice, building/roofing contractor, taxi driver, food or package delivery, construction and trade jobs, data support/analyst, etc may be available, if you have the right skills and are willing to learn.
Moreover, if you get higher education you will be more likely to land a job despite your felonies. Mostly because those with an education have a broader range of skills and past professional experience.
If you don’t have an education, we strongly recommend taking classes at a local technical college or trade school.
Many offenders that we know are taking engineering classes. Within a year they are working in a factory making around $15-17 an hour. We have seen this time and time again.
Coding, computer programming, accounting and graphic design skills are also in high demand in the current work market place.
Here is a list of additional employment opportunities to consider
- Freelance Jobs for Felons
- Roofing Jobs for Felons
- Temp Agency Jobs for Felons
- Medical Jobs for Felons
When you look for jobs, try to apply to places that may skip the background check or will do a very limited one.
As you may have already discovered, failing the criminal background check is the SINGLE factor that prevents most felons from finding decent paying employment, or any job at all for that matter!
Small businesses that employ felons
It may come as a surprise, but many small owner operated business are often willing to give felons another chance. Of course, this depends on what your past crime is, the circumstances around it, as well as your overall knowledge and skills.
As you will see from the list, these business are usually professional trade or construction companies, that are always looking for new workers. The owner wants to see someone honest, very hard working, punctual, and eager to learn new skills.
If you are willing to get on the job training, eventually you can get a much better paying job at this or a different (larger) company as a foreman or project manager ($30+ per hour).

Also, even if you get accepted to drive for a Ride Sharing service, you need a fairly recent vehicle.
Oil companies hiring felons
If none of the local companies want to hire you because of your felony conviction, consider going to work for an oil company. They are more open to hiring felons and the pay is very high ($30 per hour+) because these are very challenging jobs and very few people want them.
Many companies, such as ExxonMobile, also offer apprenticeships and on the job training to attract candidates that are interested in these jobs.
Jobs in the oil/fracking industry include:
Fracking equipment operator
Oil field operator
Derrick hand
Floorhand/leasehand/roustabout
Mechanical assembler
Hot oil operator
Tank driver
Truck driver
Water transfer operator
The oil industry is booming in the US and its continuously creating new jobs to keep up with the growing demand for oil.
This is good news for felons looking for work, because they have a much higher chance of getting hired in the oil sector, compared to other industries.
List of oil companies that accept employees with felony convictions
The following fracking oil companies are hiring felons to fill many on the positions that are currently in extremely high demand in the fracking industry.
ExxonMobile
Chevron
Halliburton
Conoco Phillips
ATI
Eastern Propane
ENSERVCO
Bosque Systems
Honstein Oil and Distributing
Arnold Oil Company Fuels
Most of the oil jobs are located in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, California, Utah, Colorado, North Dakota, Wyoming, New Mexico and Alaska.
Passing The Background Check For Employment
What you need to understand is that most entry-level, minimum wage positions (under $11-12 per hour) in big corporations are much harder for felons to get than similar jobs in a smaller company.
This is because in most of these jobs, be it retail or food service, you will need to have direct contact with customers. Employers get very nervous about this and don’t want to run the risk of exposing their clients to a felon.
Another reason of course is the background check. Even if you do well on the interview, the corporate background check is very extensive, and the policy is usually to turn down everyone who fails the background check.
Even if its been 10 years or more since your conviction, many of these jobs will turn you down, even though on their applications they state that they are an equal opportunity employer. This is because many states report criminal charges that over 10 years old and these still show up on the background check.
Having said this, you should still APPLY to all local open positions in the area, where you would be qualified to work. The more you apply, the higher your chances that someone will hire you, despite the felony charges.
In many instances, if you have a marketable skill (such as computer related, or construction), it will often be easier to do freelance work online, or start your own business. In this case, you can avoid the background check all together.
Improving Credit Can Help A felon Get A Better Job
A little known secret is that many companies like to run a credit check on a potential applicant to see if they have good credit. This indicator helps hiring managers determine how trustworthy someone is.
Of course, many felons struggle with really poor credit and have credit scores that are bellow 300!!!! This fact in addition to the background check really lowers a felon’s chances of getting a job.
However, while there is very little most ex cons can do about their background check, there is A LOT to be done about repairing your poor credit. Yes its very hard and takes mindful spending, time and effort. However, many people have bounced back from really bad credit and even bankruptcy, so you can do it if you put your mind to it.
If you are determined to fix your credit, read our step by step guide on how to get from a low to an excellent credit score.
Best of luck in your job search. Let us know your experience with any of the above companies, or a company that we should add to this list.
If this article has helped you out in anyway please share it on your social media or email it to other felons that you may know. Together we can find good work and get a fresh start in our lives!
This is workplace discrimination I strongly feel and it seems so incredibly punitive, nearly permanently punitive, which doesn’t seem right or fair or logical and does not better society as a whole. I myself have never been convicted of a felony though I am currently charged with 2 which have continuously been reset for trial by the court since 8/2020 (when I was charged). I have previous misdemeanor convictions of assault family violence against my abusive now ex husband (same category and person involved for the charges I am currently taking to trial when the court finally lets me), so much for the right to a “speedy trial”. I never went to trial for my misdemeanor convictions, I pled out because the prosecutor and even my own attorneys scared me into fearing worst case scenarios. I have 3 children, a strong work ethic, and a degree from a top public university but can not find a decent paying job. I have had lots of 2nd interviews and even offers but the moment the background check comes up or comes back it all gets shut down. I have no other criminal history aside from the allegations, many of which are lies staged by my ex who is “well connected and financially well equipped”. This has more of less ruined my life as without a job I can not support myself and/of my children and I just want to be able to work in my field of study and what I am passionate about. I ran my own business for about 8 years but ex destroyed that during our divorce, defying court orders, and barely even got a slap on the wrist for it. He actually admitted to multiple crimes under oath during the divorce (including aggravated perjury, assault, sexual assault, fraud, and UUMV) yet no charges have come against him. He still has his job making almost $200k per year and no degree while I can’t get a job at Target. It’s depressing and disheartening. This needs to change for all of those in this position. Everyone complains about homelessness, drug use, crime, etc, i guarantee this has to do with those issues for many.
I am wondering how this turned out for you. I am facing a similar circumstance. And you posted on my birthday.
I’m a first time offender and the post office just let me go who will hire me i didn’t do time just placed on probation for a felony
My brother is facing this issue. He has had 5 jobs in 9 mo.; I was pushed out of my 22yr. union utility career as a “brown” minority whistleblower, with all agencies ganging up in order to silence me, keeping me from sueing them by pushing me straight into poverty living. I tell my brother, the only difference between him and the rest of the human race: He GOT CAUGHT for committing his crime and paid his dues. That should be enough. Even God gave “safe” cities for criminals in the Bible. I would like to see this type of history repeating itself, “safe” cities that provide employment for best employees any employer would be honored to have!
I’m a registered S*x Offender (Cyber Crime, No Contact Victims), I can’t be a go into a home plumber, electrician, or as door-to-door salesman, or deliver pizza, taxi/Uber, work with minors, old or sick people or use a smart phone. I’m not in shape and so white, I burn in the sun. I must get a job, what do I do? (Other than die?) Pool of non-violent s*x offenders is huge and increasing (baited and entrapped). The best thing you can do to stop recidivism is get them a job. But what if you can’t?
Home Depot recruiter told me they hire a third party to do the background checks, and they always comeback, no matter what you did, as “Do not Hire”
Yes Troy,
Why would I hire a s*x offender (its still violence whether by your hands or not) to work for my company when there are hundreds of people who need a job and don’t have your undesirable character traits? We don’t need people life you in our society. You belong in the outskirts.
Criminals have a low IQ it’s a lie if you ever see it says someone has a higher one and can’t control impulses. It’s impossible for them to solve problems logically. People don’t want to hire idiots without impulse control who tick every mark on the sociopath list. Forget about working you can’t get your $hiт straight. Ever. Best thing to do is join a cult and get sterilized. Haha you want to hide everything you are and what you’ve done so you can do it again you’re compulsive liars and you’re lying here as well. Sick pieces of $hiт who love ruining things and people. Can’t be honest even anonymously.
You you moving under a rock. Do you research. Actually many people incarcerated have higher IQ’s. Many of them just have an untreated mental health disorder. I’m a felon many times over and guess what I have a bachelor’s degree from a top nursing school!!! This is just ignorant
I agree. My son has a felony that is 9 years old. Non violent but a felony never the less. He has a college degree, Bachelor in Social Services, very smart and he can’t get a job only because felony pops up and employers don’t even bother to ask or question what it was for. Felony and that’s that…not hired.
He should be able to get that expunged. It will cost a few hundred but after 7yrs your eligible.
Maybe in NY you can go back into nursing.
That’s not true at all.
Anderson windows denied me employment due to having a felony conviction on my record so I would take them off this list
The struggle is real!! It’s really hard to even want continue even looking for a decent job. I’ve been hired went through ISTC then went to get my badge and was turned away because of felony several places.
Is there a petition we can start and after so many signatures from non felons that are against the background check being so hard to pass would that give us an opportunity to present to whoever in hopes that the background check will be easier to pass….
Something has to be done!
I agree we need to address this issue on a bigger scale. It is really stressful and if the background shows that the mistake was in the past with no current criminal activity since then it’s really sad! Like the system is designed for failure and not second chances at all!!!! We really should shine a spotlight on this issue. I’m with you Bailey Davis and would be fully on board to coming up with ideas and research to see what can be done about this. Like a Felony Union, for change and true long term freedom.
There is a platform online to create an electronic petition. I am an advocate for prison reform and system changes that will help people recover from the negative stigma that goes with jail/ prison time. You should write the governor and your congress representative for the state you live in. I do often about public services and systems that affect us. Usually there’s a message template you can send your concerns in and at least your voice is heard. The more we complain about it and suggest ways to correct it, the better our society will be to live in.
I agree with you because the struggle is real! I feel like we’re constantly being punished even after we serve our time. Start the petition, let’s make a change!
The law of averages, the more places u try, the more you’ll get.
But be smart, I was down for 24 yr.
Then just caught simple shit. Lie when u do small companies, plumbing, carpentry, electric, restaurants don’t care cause they’re always looking for people. But big Corporations naw.
They will pay u less an work u more.
Good luck
Something needs to be done about these back ground checks it don’t matter what you did time for you should be able to do any job you want not have a life sentence!!! You’ve done your time!!!!
It’s been so hard looking for a decent job smh I’m still going to court for this charge and haven’t been convicted but it’s on my background check. Last year I got offered a job and then month later they did an adverse letter and let me go…Everything background checks now and this is the first time that I’m really scared that I won’t ever find a job..
I got turned down for a job because I have 2 felony and 1 misdemeanor charge that I have been sentenced for or agreed to s plea deal, no nothing but shows up for my background check in Texas. Is that legal. It’s stopping me from making money to be able to take care of my business with the court house. I live in Louisiana so without a job it’s beyond difficult for me to get there with no money.
I’m a convicted felon located in Austin, looking for a career path that will train me and place me in a competitive paying job. Did 20 yrs so behind the career curve.
Honestly I had an employer hire me and than fire me a week after I was hired. I stated all my convictions which were over 13 years old. And totally forgot one which was not even a felon in tbe 1sr degree it was a felony 3 just above a misdemeanor. HR called me and asked me about tbe charge and I was honest I explained that during my interview I would stop writing and was talking to the interviewer and may have lost my chain of thought and forgot that one charge. I explain that this particular charge was over 15 years ago and was the least degree of my felony 1’s. It was like she thought I was purposely lying. If was going to lie it would have been for the more serious crimes but there mind was maze up. I still can’t get a job that pays at least decent for tbe work PA, I have great work ethics, strong character witnesses from business owners i have worked for I have not been to jail in over 8 years last conviction 13 years ago. They say no one wants to work I don’t see that at all on my side of tbe street. So anyway if anyone from Philadelphia PA area know of something by all means I would appreciate it
I’m going through the same kind of thing. It’s so frustrating and depressing. I finally got a job at Mondelez 2 weeks ago and I just received an adverse letter saying they are withdraw I their job offer
This list has changed. Half of these companies now do background checks and wont hire you if you have a background. Amazon, Walmart, etc….says your not a human being worthy of basic employment.
Your site is BS. Sex offenders are in each state by the thousands. Many are not responsible for a major crime or hurting someone. You can get on that list for many, many things. So you’ll hire a murderer or drug dealer but not someone who was 18 that slept with his 16-year-old girlfriend. Many of these companies will hire sex offenders on a case by case basis. Since you cannot even spell out SEX I imagine the discrimination is by the person running this site, not these companies.
i am 52 years old and i live in texas, i was charged with a fake felony that had nothing to do with the charges, i was tagged to never work or live here in the USA from Texas the state claim that i am the worse case ever. I was placed on restriction, i cant be around other people i am disabled.
Go to your local TWC formerly DARS and they can help you find something to do since you are disabled. There may be some work from home stuff you can do.
Try Goodwill Industries.
